Why, when, and how do pine cones open and close? A pine cone time lapse and learning the science behind it all leads me to more than just one dose of wonder - multiple doses!

Very interesting video! Thank you for making it. I teach gardening to autistic children and we are going to do a pinecone growing project today so I will show them you’re very interesting video first!

Amazing! I always collect pinecones and for the first time, I accidentally dropped one and all of the seeds spilled out. Fascinating, thank you for your wonderful video!

That was wonderful! I started a nature journal about a month ago - when the grandkids visit they contribute…right now we are doing journal pages on the amazing pine cone… if we can find a dry open one we will experiment with the waterbath

This is amazing. You should work on your pitch to PBS, or some other such educational forum... great work Kal. Time to make your full online course my friend, with animation...

This is so cool! Of all the pine cones I've seen in my life. I never even stopped to really ask myself why I was seeing tight and loose cones! I just absentmindedly thought they were from different species or something, which is of course a lazy conclusion! Thanks for sharing!

[I'm not a scientist] The secret is in the different colors of the wood inside the cone. The light colored wood is dense and in the growing process is kinda spring loaded to open the cone. The darker wood is softer, more porous, so more susceptible to expansion and contraction. In a sense, the lighter wood is like a bone and the darker wood is like a muscle. The tree gives moisture to the cone while it is growing and when it dries, the softer wood shrinks and it opens to drops the seeds. The cones closing in the rain? I'm not sure if that is advantageous or just benign. Next lesson: serotinous cones and why scientists keep saying they are glued together with pine tar, when they are not.

That was really wonderful. Something so simple a pine cone, everyone know what there are and never really think about them. I knew they open and closed because of weather (moisture) yet did not know you could close them again after they had fallen from a tree. I came across your video in search of how to cut open a pine cone. Really enjoyed it, outtakes nice too. Cutting and drying pine cones for epoxy pour. Thanks for sharing.
How did you cut open the pine cone?

I love this! And because the universe is freaky, I just read a book to the kids that mentioned pine cones keeping their scales closed to protect their seeds. I was gonna do more research on it, so I am thrilled that you posted this video! I'm definitely going to try that pine cone in water experiment, mostly for me, but I guess the kids will benefit too.

The mother pine cone protects the seed from rain and predators, then ejects the defenseless seed in the fall when it snows and the predators are hungry. Kinda rough. How about doing a time lapse of how pine seed sprouts and gets the seed coat off its head. It's fascinating.

Filaree seeds and castor beans seeds in their pods are fun to watch when they explode!

Did you know you can get parasite if you don't soak the pinecones property for 24hours in vinegar before you paint them in a craft

Not mysticism, lost technology. What if these ancients archived all their knowledge using DNA data storage in pine trees? Pine trees genetically altered to survive any catastrophe with all the information intact. Could this explain the pine cone symbolism used by pagans and ancient humans? Could this information be encrypted and the decryption key was given to some individual that created some royal bloodline that must be protected and propagated at all cost?

Came to find out where the pine-nuts are, stayed for the science.
