Love it! This was the version I heard as a kid. Went to #13 in the US and #1 in the UK in 1964, both higher than any other version. One of the classic key changes of that era. Written by Jack Nitzsche and Sonny Bono, produced by Tony Hatch which is a name that should be familiar to anyone who follows Kenn's channel as the producer of all Petula Clark's hits.

One of my favorite British Invasion songs. Sounds fantastic.

This Music hits the Soul, the words are real emotions and not scripted. We live in a world now where music is not from the heart, its only what sounds good and the Music is the only thing that counts, not the words.

Lyrics:

I saw her today
I saw her face
It was a face I loved
And I knew
I had to run away
And get down on my knees and pray
That they’d go away

But still they begin
Needles and pins
Because of all my pride
The tears I gotta hide

Hey, I thought I was smart
I won her heart
Didn’t think I’d do
But now I see
She’s worse to him than me
Let her go ahead
Take his love instead
And one day she will see

Just how to say please
And get down on her knees
Yeah, that’s how it begins
She’ll feel those needles and pins
Hurtin’ her, hurtin’ her

Why can’t I stop
And tell myself I’m wrong
I’m wrong, so wrong
Why can’t I stand up
And tell myself I’m strong

Because I saw her today
I saw her face
It was a face I loved
And I knew
I had to run away
And get down on my knees and pray
That they’d go away

But still they begin
Needles and pins
Because of all my pride
The tears I gotta hide

Oh, needles and pins
Needles and pins
Needles and pins

You know those pop songs that you can listen to over and over and over well this is one of them...catchy pop bliss.

Ah magic! I have that yellow vinyl single in my collection. This was produced by Tony Hatch who also applied his magic to a lot of Petula Clark's hits such as 'Downtown'. All great productions. Hatch later became infamous for his blunt comments on TV talent shows such as 'New Faces'....but you could argue from these productions that he knew what he was talking about. Thanks for the additional treatment Kenn.

When I was at Strong Memorial Hospital having eye surgery, my beloved mother was staying with me, and I was listening to the FM
radio that was built in to the nightstand in my hospital room.
I had on a channel,
which was Rochester, New York radio station
WVOR-100, which played adult contemporary music, and great WVOR-100
solid gold oldies.
But WVOR-100 was pretty much an oldies station.
They had Lunchtime At
The Oldies, and also the
Overnight Oldies Hour,
with Mark Davis.
WVOR-100 was up in Midtown Plaza.

I love Mersey Beat music from the British Invasion so very much. When I went to England I had to make a special trip to Liverpool just to see the city where it came from.

Just today (Feb. 15, 2022) I learned of Kenn's passing in January. Truly a tragedy. My thoughts are with Kenn's family and friends and those who knew him through his wonderful work on The Music Enhancement Channel. His absence will be painfully felt by all who knew him.
I found Kenn's channel quite by accident 5 years ago while browsing YouTube. It was the best discovery I ever made. His talent for tastefully upgrading oldies music was superlative to say the least. How can I adequately describe the effect it had? What description can there be for the memories Kenn resurrected for me and so many others? Kenn's abilities were unique. He wholeheartedly devoted his skills not only to keeping the oldies fresh in our minds, but to heightening the experience as well. What Kenn did was a labor of love, and it showed in everything he produced. And what he did may well never be repeated or even attempted ever again. This, too, is a tragedy.
Rest in eternal peace, Kenn Wingle. I will always think of you as a friend.
