In which I (once again) gush about The House on Mango Street and Sandra Cisneros. I chopped this up from a video about two books, so if the intro is a little weird, that's why!

Great review! I really really love this book too. I love how the disjointedness of the vignettes allow us to see exactly what is important to Esperanza, because she only says what she notices (the stream of consciousness point of view also helps). I love the poetic language and the lack of a focus on plot. Not a word is wasted! This book is definitely one of my favorites

I read this book. All the characters were either married woman complaining about their current situation, pedophiles who appear for 1 chapter then disappear to never be addressed again or underdeveloped.

This was a book read in 9th grade English and I loved it. As an assignment, we had to write our own little vignette that would fit into the book. I wish I could find the short story I did, but that was roughly 7 years ago :/

I personally didn't really seem to enjoy the book I read it from cover to cover and was hoping the story would pick up and personally I didn't seem to enjoy it I understood and I do read I loved "The Fault In Our Star" but this book just doesn't seem to tickle my fancy it a long sluggish read for me that dragged on for 2 hours I felt like I was gonna relate to the book as a Mexican American and Costa Rican but I personally felt not attachment she seems like too much of a neutral character to me and I understand that she is just growing up but I've read books about kids that have more of a character then Esperanza she is just overall suck a dull character on my eyes I'm not hating on the book nor saying it's horrible I'm just giving my two cents that's all thank you for reading my comment and have a nice day

I know that my mom adores this book. I've been wanting to read it for years, but I didn't know that it was in a series of vignettes. This definitely makes me want to check it out! :]

I had to read this book 5 times for school sure some of the stories are relatable but this was just annoying just because I’m a Latina does not mean I only that type of book !!! I’m an adult now and every time I see a copy I want to burn it! However I don’t believe in mistreatment of books so obviously I refrain.

I'm glad that you had a good read. I'd be interested to know what you think about chicano literature broadly. Or maybe you can do a poetry recommendation vid?

I read this book to improve my english, and yes it is simple and has poetic chapters. I think one of my favorite chapter is about the trees. Thanks for your review!

The only positive I can attribute to this steaming pile of literary garbage, is that it’s readable.
The only way it could have gotten any worse was if it suddenly became Morse code after the first poorly written mess of a chapter. I simply cannot understand why this book is regarded as a classic by many.
I don’t care if the novel has hidden deeper meanings, and messages meant to be conveyed to the reader, if receiving these things forces me to dig through page, after page of barely readable, almost nauseating filler.
