Mr. Ee! - Top 85 Games for the BBC Micro (21)

In at #21 is the thoroughly feel-good arcade game Mr. Ee! Developed by Adrian Stephens and published by Micro Power in 1984, this game owes its inspiration to the Universal / Taito arcade classic "Mr. Do!" Here, though, we play as a wizard rather than a clown, desperately collecting cherries while evading Umphs, Maras and letter monsters - with just some apples and a crystal ball for defence! A joyous, addictive game that cannot help but raise a smile. Enjoy!

Eating the cherries one after the other to complete the sound gives more points ;)

Good choice. Probably in my top ten. Can't remember how many hours I ploughed into this at home and at the school computer club.

This is still one of my all time favourite games. I’ve never seen the BBC version before but what a great conversion.

One of my favourite BBC games. We had this on the (only) computer at my primary school. A lunchtime treat.

Unfortunately the down key [?] was broken so we all became very skilled at only using the top half of the screen. Despite this we got quite good at it!

Fantastic clone of Mr. Do! This game is so much better than Pacman. There's more strategy into it when you try to kill the monsters with falling apples for score. And the weapon that you have to spare for when you are really trapped instead of blasting like it's new year is something different.

Superb game. Never played Mr do that much but I think this is arcade perfect.

as a huge Mr Do! fan, I was thrilled when this came out for my Beeb and it did not disappoint, a truly brilliant arcade clone and I dread to think of the amount of hours I played this for. Great pick but if this is 21 then I cannot wait to see the top 20. ;)

Loved your video and your commentary. I particularly liked your descriptions/names for the different monster types :-) Like others on here, I knew the arcade game as Mr. Do first (that you could play in British pubs), then was thrilled to bits when I realised I could also play it on the Beeb. The conversion was almost like-for-like. The only difference I recall is the CONGRATULATIONS upon being awarded an extra life (when collecting all 5 letter monsters). The background graphic for that was different

This game is so so good (ELITE and Defender are better but it might be my number 3). Even though i played it just recently the music, the collection 'scale' and the music for the other monsters (never knew they had names) all made me really smile. It also completely nails that thing of making you want to play again because you just know you can do better! Also love the way the level designs have the level number built in. And love the colour schemes on each level. And and and... FABULOUS!

One of my top 5 BBC games. BTW you should be zapping the Letter characters and spell the word “Extra”, this will give you an extra life each time you do it.

I was addicted to this as a kid. I once won so many extra lives that they disappeared off the top of the screen 😆

I've been slacking on my commenting on the newer entries in the Top 85 - tuh! Either way, I remember this well... Beyond how it seemed to be advertised on the back cover of Acorn User for seemingly several years(!), I remember how the sound used to BLAST out of the speaker, very arcade like. Whilst not in my "all time of all time favourites" on the Beeb, it certainly was a great play, and one I used to load up frequently.
It was another that, back in the day, I didn't know was a clone and just thought it was it's own game, but it always felt very arcade-y and handled really slickly. It was (yet) another that I had on my compendium of, ahem, "backup" games floppies, and like many of the others, had the instructions chopped off the loader (I guess in order to make disk space) and so I really had to work out what was what as I played. And it is a CHAOTIC game, even with the instructions. But that's part of it's fun, it just has so much going on, so much on-screen action, and all of it without seemingly any slowdown to the gameplay. Young me used to like playing it to simply see if I could 'complete the full set of chime sounds for collecting the cherries'. Probably right up there with 'Killer Gorilla' (yep, same author) as one of the Beeb's very best clones. I also had fellow clone 'Mr. Wiz', and the (presumably unlicensed) 'Mr. Do' itself, but from memory, 'Mr. Ee' was the best of them.

Anyone else notice how the letter monsters hide behind other monsters when you have the crystal ball, but come straight for you when you don't. Sneaky!

Another great game, very well executed I think

Definitely one of the best on the Beeb. A brilliant game. Worth aiming for spelling EXTRA as you'll get a bonus life I think. Plus a nice little cartoon.

Shooting each Alpha monster to collect it's letter, lighting EXTRA word above the playfield will award the player an extra life, and will clear the level being played when the last letter is shot/ collected Collecting each set of apples in a singular pattern, where the tone gets higher pitched, the score is higher with the higher pitch tone. An extremely good and accurate clone

Loved Mr Do in the arcade back in the day. I remember getting this on my Beeb and thinking how good it was, need to track it down for my BBC emulator. *edit* Also, incorrect technique! Early on in each level kill all but one or two baddies with an apple. Then spend rest of level getting as many EXTRA letters as you can.

1:00 You only say because you have not seen "Tricky's" (Richard Broadhurst IIRC) games. His arcade translations and "emulators" are the most authentic games on the Beeb.

This is an incredible conversion that puts the C64 official version to shame. I can't believe the Zzap! review said the C64 graphics were identical to the arcade! That couldn't have been further from the truth, they were awful and that's coming from a C64 fan!
