Main Dining Room Explained - Royal Caribbean Cruise Food

The main dining room is the largest dining venue on a Royal Caribbean Cruise. This is where many guests enjoy most of the dinners. Continuing with our Royal Caribbean Cruise food video series we are going to tell you everything you need to know about the MDR. We broke our video down into seven sections including atmosphere, location, dining times, menu, dress code, tips and our overall thoughts.

We have been asked a lot of questions about the Royal Caribbean Cruise main dining room. The largest main dining room we have ever seen was on the Allure of the Seas and it was three floors. There was a massive chandelier in the middle and lots of artwork around the dining room. The Royal Caribbean dining room experience is very different on the Quantum class of ships. Instead of one massive main dining room there are 4 smaller ones with their own theming and menu options.

Your Royal Caribbean Cruise dining time will depend on if you chose traditional dining or my time dining. Usually a floor of the dining room is set aside for traditional dining and you will be either the first or second seating. You will be assigned the same table, table mates and server for each dinner. For my time dining you will not have a set dining time every night instead you will either make a reservation or show up and wait for an available table. The Royal Caribbean cruise main dining room food does not change if you choose traditional or my time dining. You will have the same menu so you don't have to worry about feeling like you are missing out.

We were really impressed with the menu in the main dining room. Royal Caribbean cruise food did not disappoint. Breakfast lunch and dinner are served in the MDR. For lunch and dinner there is a three course menu. The dinner menu Dinner is also a three course meal. There are classics which are available every night and then a rotation of options so every night is different. Royal Caribbean cruise do bring in local flavours so the menu options for your sailing will be different than ours.

Dinner in the MDR has always been a highlight for us. The food is excellent, the wait staff pampers us, and for the most part, we've enjoyed our table companions.

A dress code is nice, it is a sign of respect for oneself and the venue. We don't need to wear ball gowns, but some semblance of formality is good.

Your video captured the feel of the room as well as the food, which looks delectable. I’m cruising again next year and can’t wait.

“Avoid….bare feet.” 🤣🤣🤣 You two are kind of subtly hilarious. I love your videos. I am not really a formal person, and I do not go all out for formal night. BUT shoes should be a given. 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️

I do like early traditional dining and I do wear evening gowns on formal nights

The main dining room tends to make me feel more special than dining in the Windjammer. But, I do like being able to just walk into the Windjammer and start grazing - especially, if I have a busy itinerary for the day. And, the food in the Windjammer is also good and visually appealing.

We do our version of dress up for formal night, it means dressier than casual for us. We love the main dining room.

I always remember “dressing” for dinner & wearing black tie gowns on formal nights. My son at the time was 2 years old & I rented him a tuxedo for the formal nights.

Thanks! Over 30 cruises with Royal, and we didn't know about the lemonade in the MDR!
(Assumed it was the same as the W/J's)
The only time we had dress code enforced was on a Transatlantic.

First time cruisers and we're having trouble deciding what Caribbean Cruise to take. I'm liking Oasis of the Seas. Great info thanks.

We sailed once with RC on board "Symphany of The Seas " and loved the service in the MDR. We are booked for next spring to Alaska and look forward to our next cruise.

On our last cruise aboard the Wonder ots, we bought the Ultimate Dining Package. On one particular night we had early reservations at a restaurant because that was the only available time. We came back from Coco Cay late and had to cancel, so we ate in the MDR. The meal that night was lobster or filet mignon. Our server recommended the combo. It was just as good as any of the specialty restaurants. So we decided to forgo paying the extra money next time.
Tip… if you buy any of the dining packages make sure you reserve your restaurants and times as soon as possible especially if you are aboard an Oasis class ship. They sell out almost immediately.

I wear my Sundays Best to MDR and Specialty dining venues. I typically go with the My Time option and pre book as soon as I finish the muster drill, in other words as soon as I step on the ship. Thanks for sharing, your videos are detailed and great for helping new cruisers and refreshing seasoned cruisers.

I recently found out you can also ask for half sized portions!

Great video re MDR here. While casual is fine for earlier meals, wearing a ball cap is a poor choice and disrespectful to others!

The food looks great and more varied than i expected for the main dining room. I like the relative spaciousness. Thanks for the dress code reminder, I will be sure and pack long pants. As always from you 2, an enjoyable and useful video
