This solution is still working in July 2024. macOS Sonoma 14.5 includes 'Combine Word documents' in Automator. It seems it went missing briefly from some past macOS installations, but it is back.

Thank you for posting this workaround - but I'm getting an error message:
The action “Combine Word Documents” encountered an error: “Microsoft Word got an error: document "Document5" doesn’t understand the “insert file” message.”  
All Apple and MS software is up to date - though Automator is Version 2.10 (512). Can this all be done with the new Shortcuts app?

I have a 2020 MacBook Pro with the very latest OS and there is no option to combine word documents. It sure would be helpful if you could explain why it isn't showing up for a number of us. I have MS Office on my machine.
