USS Texas and the Tampico Affair

Показать описание
Just months before the assassination of Franz Ferdinand would begin the July Crisis, a minor incident in the city of Tampico nearly sparked a war between the US and its southern neighbor. The incident represented the beginning of the active service of USS Texas to be a part of a diplomatic action against the dictatorial regime of Victoriano Huerta. The largely overlooked Tampico incident could have resulted in war, and did affect world politics for years to come.

I'm 61 years old as I write this comment. I have visited BB-35 so many times since the age of 3 that I have lost count. I've lived on board with Cub Scout and Boy Scout camping trips twice during the early years of the current millennium. USS Texas has always been a part of me and I know many of her interior spaces as well or better than the sailors who sailed her around the world. To Lance, a HUGE THANK YOU for once again recounting history that features this great lady!

Used to take my now adult kids (one at a time, of course) to the Texas on the back of the Honda every couple of years when they were young. Became sort of a tradition. On one of these, my son and I were two decks down when we came upon a tour group which had two tour guides. My son was asking me all sorts of questions about the area we were in, and one of the guides overheard him, broke off from the group, and asked my son and me if we'd like to see the lower decks. So we spent the next couple of hours climbing down step ladders, and stepping over various equipment being used to maintain the lower decks, eventually ending up in the emergency steering room deep down in the stern. My 30-something son and I still talk about it to this day. What a great thing for that guide to do.

I've been to the USS Texas twice. It's an amazing machine and you can almost feel the spirits of those who served on it's decks when you visit. Thanks for supporting the effort to maintain this piece of American history.

I have toured the USS Texas more times than I can count over the years since 1978. We would take the kids and make a day of it, strolling the sea walk, going to Guidos and window shopping on the Strand. Thank you History Guy!

I worked with a World War II Marine Vet and he told me about the USS Texas at Iwo Jima. The Texas, (as he fondly call the New York-class battleship) provide naval gunfire support during the Battles of Iwo Jima. He was so proud to look out on the horizon and knew she was there. He told me they had to call for support several times and he could see the ship fire and not hear the blast until later. Then the blast of the shell when it came in made the island shack like an earthquake.

THG your videos are so refreshing. Just history, no hype, no drama, no aliens. History told by a great presenter. If my teachers back in the day would of taught with as much passion as you talk about history no matter the subject, I would have paid more attention instead cutting class to go smoke pot and surf.

Just visited the USS Texas a couple of weeks ago and she is sorely in need of repair. I wish tours were still being allowed. Thank you THG for another great video.

I brought my children to the San Jacinto Battleground state park on a regular basis in the 90s. We always ate lunch at a concrete picnic table on her starboard side. Thank you for helping to preserve that battle hardened beauty History Guy.

Warren Zevon wrote a wonderful song about this incident called Veracruz.

“I heard Woodrow Wilson's guns
I heard Maria crying
Late last night I heard the news
That Veracruz was dying”
