Odin sounds better then LAWS, we have enough things called laws..

Captain:“Get the laws ready!”

Sailor: (Grabs a LAWs disposable launcher)
Captain: No not that!

Petty officer: (grabs a book of international maritime laws)
Captain: Not that either, the laser weapon..

Master Chief petty officer: Captain, with the coffee machines running it’s just a glorified laser pointer..

Solution: Now we actually have a REASON to reinstate and build super battleships again: for to carry Giant Lasers instead of ancient pop guns.
We can put a couple Gauss Guns on them to boot.

Red lasers = 25%
Blue lasers = 25%
Knowing = 50%

They are upgrading ODIN now to a 500kw from 300kw without adding hardly any new hardware. Burns through aluminum/metals skins.

For now it's large...it will get smaller over time....remember how freaking big microwaves were...

Just like any technology, these laser systems will eventually get smaller, stronger & better in time.

Maybe Iowa style battleships could be big enough for such lasers and rail guns.

If LAWS is to big for arleigh Burke (nicknamed "arleigh-brick" from the early thumbnail covering the destroyer), then why not slap it on the canceled zumwalt class destroyer? The big boat has enough juice to power two LAWS and an ODIN, theoretically speaking

They're already putting HELIOS on the Flight IIA Burkes during refits... which is a significantly more powerful system on a less capable (but still impressive) electric plant. HELIOS requires significant dock time, and the weapons system integration required longer development. ODIN was always a stop gap and IS probably the best they could do as a *bolt-on*, but its not true that the Burkes can't carry more powerful laser systems.

They should put this laser on an aircraft carrier since the have unlimited power anyways

"hey, a laser! How come YOU dont have a laser, Woody?"
"Its not a laser! Its a little light bulb that blinks!"

The UK version of LAWS is called DragonFire, which is an infinitely cooler name

It's not the emitter that is a problem, it is the power source. New ships are being fit with two to three times the power they need for normal ship operations.

However, even that "is not what you think." You can bet money that research is still being done, or is already completed and being implemented on the newest classes of ships coming out, on Laser-Induced Plasma Channel (LIPC) systems.

These systems will create a conductive plasma channel of ionized atmosphere to deliver a truly enormous electrical discharge to a target, destroying it with a lightning bolt, essentially. It will necessitate guide banks of capacitors attached to the accessory reactors in a ship so as to facilitate shots as quickly as possible.

My hope is that they are working on land-based systems as well for large area missile defense. The cool thing about it is that, if a vehicle is moving at several Mach, it is going to be creating a discernable plasma channel of its own. Rather than trying to keep that fast target painted, a system could simply fire at the threat's plasma channel and create a circuit to the threat that would deliver the electrical charge at near light speed, destroying it regardless of heat shielding or high speed.

Here's hoping. Here's seriously hoping... 🤞

Give it another decade and it will birth a whole new beast.
