What a psych for sore minds, my mind hasn't psyched this channel, whatever that means, since yesterday I do believe.

I've never shoplifted, but I understand when people get desperate & don't have their basic needs fed, they run out of options. I'm not talking about the shoplifting from boutiques & designers but like grocery stores, need for medicines, etc. Our $ has bigger pie wedge cuts where the other needs r neglected until it becomes urgent. This is not the world I grew up in the 1970s or 1980s (genX'er).

Personally, I'd note 1) Yes, food prices have become unaffordable 2) there is a sense of injustice as the price rises seem fuelled by "greedflation". 3) self service tills depersonalise the situation 4) staff cuts mean there are less eyes on the tills and floor 5) surveillance by cameras seems extensive but how many people are even watching them at the other end?6) fun fact, cameras were hidden above the check outs because major people involved in shop lifting are thought to be - the staff on the tills!

This neglects the fact there’s been an increase in laws that enable it, people can shoplift knowing the police will never investigate the crime so long as they steal under a certain amount. It’s no longer limited to those who are destitute and willing to take a desperate gambit to provide for themselves, there’s now the temptation of a consequence-free way to snatch another person’s wealth for very little effort.

Another datapoint is the fact shoplifting isn’t universally seen in populations who are living in poverty, so there isn’t a perfect correlation in shoplifting statistics to support the claim poverty is the driving factor.

It's not food and other necessities that people are looting - there are plenty of videos online of the reality of the situation.

Hi doctor, I’ve been diagnosed with schizophrenia, I’m on cozapine and I’ve gotten a lot better and have more insight but I still have residual lingering paranoia, does that ever go away?

Many people have had four decades of wage stagnation. The current economic patterns (increasing inequality, decreasing home ownership, significant inflation, stagnant wages, rising interest rates, historically high private debt etc.) are unsustainable, and are already creating significant economic instability. Increasing wealth consolidation goes hand in hand with a shrinking economy and rising unemployment plus poorer employment rights and conditions.

Add to that the growing instability that climate change is going to produce, primarily through disruption to global agriculture and supply chains, and we’re likely looking at severe social consequences within 3 decades. I’m fully expecting rioting by the 2050s in the U.K.. We either undertake meaningful economic reform or we watch things deteriorate further. I expect the latter is what our corrupt and useless political class will deliver. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The only people that wouldn't believe this or care is the people that are doing just fine living in their privilege. I don't justify criminal activities but there's a reason why and the biggest criminals are wealthy people.

Doc, do you feel the new "self checkout" plays a role in this as wel? And if so what role? (Idea for another short?)

Literally can't afford to eat? Has that ever happened in the UK in recent times? I could believe someone starving because they are mentally ill and can't take care of themselves but actually starving because they can't afford to eat? not a chance. Even if they couldn't afford to there are food banks where you're given free food readily available all over the country, where are you getting this from? Is this really your educated opinion? How can you explain crimes including theft going down during the great depression if there's a correlation between the cost of living and crime?

Life is too expensive. I think shoplifting also has an element of frustration and rage to it; a rebellion of anger about that.
