Subriel Matias captured the vacant IBF junior welterweight title tonight by stopping Jeremias Ponce after five rounds of intense and brutal action.

Ponce (30-1, 20 KO) came out aggressively, pressing the attack against Matias (19-1, 19 KO) with remarkable speed in the first round. The fight then became a back-and-forth exchange over the next three rounds.

In the fifth round, Ponce was knocked down hard. When he reached his corner, his team decided to stop the fight, and Ponce did not protest.

This marks Matias's fourth consecutive win via stoppage between rounds, and the seventh such instance in his career.

“We worked for 10 months in the gym. I came here to win,” Matias said. “I aimed to knock him out, and since I was looking to finish him in the sixth round, I wasn’t surprised they stopped the fight after the fifth.”

He added, “I saw he was hurt, and I was like a lion hunting for prey. I found it.”

Ponce commented, “My corner knows me better than I do. It’s better to err on the side of caution, even if I wanted to continue. I thought the fight was even, but in this kind of bout, one punch can end it, and that’s what happened.

“I came out in the first round intending to take him down, but he’s a tough fighter. I knew this would be a difficult fight. Subriel Matias is strong and tough. He hit me with a shot, I went down, and although I recovered, it was too late.”

Ponce expressed a desire for a rematch, though it’s unlikely to happen next. However, it's possible he could fight his way back to it.
