Yuthura Ban Explains the Sith Code

As part of gaining prestige in the Sith Academy on Korriban, your teacher, Yuthura Ban, cites and explains the Sith Code to you. She says that the ultimate goal is perfection, and defines perfection as being strong enough to do whatever one pleases.

Legend speaks of a perfect being known as the Sith'ari. Prophecy holds that this being will destroy the sith, but in doing so, make the Sith stronger then ever. He will be both a bane and a boon.

Kotor 1 really differentiated Jedi and sith but Kotor 2 brought them hauntingly together. I'll never forget what Atton says to you on Nar Shaddaa: "Jedi, Sith, they're all the same. People with too much power arguing over religion while the rest of us burn."

And the cool tidbit of Goto calling the Jedi and Sith: "Religious infighting"

"I can help you understand it. Would you like to hear it?

Peace is a lie, there is only Passion.
Through Passion, I gain Strength.
Through Strength, I gain Power.
Through Power, I gain Victory.
Through Victory, my chains are Broken.
The Force shall free me.

Simple words - yet easily misunderstood. The Jedi would have you believe that peace is a desirable goal; that peace of the spirit is the way the Force is mastered, that a lack of conflict betters man. We know different. It is our Passion, our Hate and our Desire that fuels the Force. It is conflict that improves the lot of civilization and single being both. Conflict forces one to better oneself. It forces change, adaption, evolution or death. These are not our laws, but the universe's. Without conflict, you have only stagnation. What fuels your power with the Force but Passion? The stronger darker emotions, anger, hatred, fear - these Passions empower us. Love is more dangerous than all those things; love leads to anger and hatred more often than not, but it also leads to mercy which is far worse... that however, is a lesson for another time.

What keeps even the most rudimentary creature alive? Fear to run. Anger to fight. Without it, a creature would most surely die. We are far more than them perhaps, but in some ways we are little different. To think us creatures beyond the need of simple Passions is a delusion. The Force gives us all power, even the Jedi. It is our mastery of our Passion that gives us the strength they lack. It is our goal to be stronger, to achieve our potential and not rest upon our laurels - we are the seekers, not the shepherds. The stronger you become in the Force, the more power you will achieve, but always must you fight for your power.

Without strife, your victory has no meaning. Without strife, you do not advance. Without strife, there is only stagnation. How many sorts of victories can you imagine? Peaceful victory, victory by sacrifice, a truce, an achievement. Unless the victory is achieved by demonstrating that your power is superior, it is only an illusion, temporary at best. We seek more.

The chains represent our restrictions - both those placed upon us and those we place upon ourselves. Ultimately, the goal of any Sith is to free herself from such restrictions. In a way it is so we may do whatever we wish, but it is much more than that; one who has freed themselves from all restrictions has reached perfection, their potential fulfilled - perfect strength, perfect power, perfect destiny. Imagine it. That is our ideal at any rate.

It is said in Sith legend that the Sith'ari, the perfect being, will one day lead us, but perhaps that is just a legend. I wonder what that being would be like. The legends say the Sith'ari will destroy us and make us stronger than ever, but perhaps that is just a legend. Perfection is a goal, I think, rather than a state of being. The Jedi would argue that, no doubt. The Force is our servant and our master, our teacher and our companion, a weapon and a tool; know it and you know the universe, master it and you master the universe, strive for perfection and the Force shall reward you.

The Force is strong with you, master it and it will serve you well.

Just In case anybody wanted it written down into a copy-able format, lol.
I have too much free time on my hands, curse this lockdown.

The sith knows the true price of freedom

I know Ban says the Code is misunderstood, but I feel like there’s another interpretation that she’s missing: the Sith Code never directly states that you *need* anger or hate to become powerful, merely passion. That passion could be anything, from the destruction of the Jedi, to simply accomplishing a task you couldn’t do before. As you take the steps towards your passion, you become stronger. That strength will grant you the power to overcome your restrictions, and you will be able to use it to achieve “victory”. Then, you will no longer be chained down by your inability to do something.

So really, the Sith Code isn’t necessarily saying “use your hatred to become powerful”, it’s instead implying that “by following your ambitions, you will become your strongest self.” It just so happens that most Sith focus on their violent emotions to follow their ambition, which usually turns out to backfire in some way.

No that I think about it, the Sith are much less restrictive than Jedi.

When the villain low-key makes more sense than the heroes of the game.

Passion and peace are not unassociated, one can rise to the challenge of passionate desire and ambition, but without internal peace and control over ones emotions and vices, you can come off as a petulant child in the eyes of most, cunning and personal control are the best options, it works in real life, ambition is great, but without proper control of your emotions and understanding yourself and your weaknesses internally you won't strive for much. A person blinded by any emotion is just a rabid animal in the eyes of most people no matter how justified you feel. While the Jedi ignores desire, the Sith feed into it too easily.

Whoa I don't remember the Sith'ari legend being in this game.

One thing I've always noticed is that the Jedi make you memorize the code, and just tell you to "meditate" on what it means. You're just supposed to ingrain it into you verbatim. The Sith make you understand their code, and the philosophy behind it. Always an interesting little tidbit for me, don't know if it was an intentional inclusion or if it was just a side-effect of not having enough time in development.

I wish the sequel trilogy explored this path more. The Sith philosophy has never been properly explored in the theatrical movies, it's always "Sith evil, Jedi good, smash light sabres!" Rian Johnson always talked about subverting expectations when he was making TLJ and he went with destroying old characters instead. If instead the sequels delved more into the Sith way and explained it the way that KOTOR did, i daresay it would have made for far better story telling. And then they could have introduced the Gray Jedi to further show that there's a better third way to find balance in the Force. IMO the Jedi and Sith are two extreme opposites and this will always result in imbalance which further leads to an endless cycle of Jedi-Sith conflict.

I've known this game my whole life, and this is one of the most enthralling parts of the game. As a kid I was actually worried I might turn to the dark side, I actually felt the power of the dark side from the amazing writing and delivery of lines like this.

When she referred to the Sithari I legit got hyped about Darth Bane

The code of the sith seems to derive partially from Voltaire, especially the part about chains. Also, the part about conflict seems Hegelian.

Every Functional Human Being is a Sith. Dysfunction exists in the extremes of the Jedi and the Psychotic Sith like Sidious. The Sith code is about control and balance through adversity. Mastery of self and the world around us. Especially our own emotions. Not repress or revel in them. Know your self, survive if you can, thrive because you must. It's human nature. Plain and simple.

Darth Bane is the Sith’ari as he helped the Jedi destroy the Sith in the Ruusan campaign and created the Rule of Two to make the Sith more powerful than ever

fatimasyed

can you imagine this being taught through the Rule of Two? This may have strengthened the Sith Lords even more throughout the Grand Plan. My take away from what Yuthura is saying is that both the Jedi and the Sith teachings are extreme in their respective sides. The Jedi cut themselves off from humanity while the Sith embrace their humanity while declaring all other's humanity is irrelevant. They both seek power, the Jedi believe in sacrificing their own beings for higher power while the Sith believe in sacrificing everybody else for higher power, however, they achieve that power while sacrificing everybody, including themselves, to achieve it. Does anybody think of this as a wrong way of thinking or do they agree in some degree?

I never realized her gestures suggested she didn't believe any of it... I played this game many times not realizing she was open to changing her mind. I hate myself for killing her ~5 times when I could have saved her. Yuthura is a vastly better character than Vader because you feel for her... she wanted to free her people. Once she realized her desire for power over her original goal... her turn made sense. I wish she could have become a companion on the journey and possible love interest.

I totally agree with yuthara ban when she says conflict forces one to better ones self….. this is a real life truth with soldiers and the U.S Military when they go through war and battles it does make someone better and grow into a better human being.
