Funky old town! I remember the original by Ewan MacColl and I remember the dirty old town but never have I heard the song stand up with such great spirit as this. Bettye Lavette you have done it proud!

This sounds like a classic straight out of Memphis by way of Hi & Willie Mitchell! Hearing this, one can only imagine the kind of classics that Bettye & Willie could've given the world...if only!

Great job!

The Dubliners, The Pogues and many others have covered this tune but just as Shane Magowan sang it unlike anyone else Bettye brings an urban Blues feel to it, for my money this is a brilliant recording but aside from the lyrics its a totally different song . After all BeBop is just a million variations of Sweet Georgia Brown.

If Hendrix altered and then renamed someone's track in my book that is plagiarism :) ... She has a great voice, everyone does covers and I think this is an excellent one :)

she is a detroit gal but a long way from Mowtown where she started a session singer.

Jake, you are, of course, entitled to your opinion. However, I generally applaud cover versions that actually make an effort to put their own stamp on a song, rather than just regurgitating a second rate version of the original. It doesn't always work, but you have to give them credit for trying. I, however, do like this version. I don't think it takes anything away from the original. If you don't like this version, then you just don't like it. And that's ok.

Ewan mccoll song I think, wrote first time ever I saw your face, father of Kirsty mccoll, why change the lyrics?

If that's how you feel about the R&B version, you must REALLY hate the bebop version!
