They’re not easily caught, but every bottom-oriented predator in the ocean regards a tasty octopus as a meal worth pursuing. Savage Gear leverages this feeding preference with a lifelike replica of that 8-armed mollusk — the 3D Octopus.

“From grouper, to halibut, to lingcod and others, fish that feed on or near the bottom won’t pass up the chance to enjoy an octopus dinner,” said Savage Gear Product Designer Jose Chavez. “An octopus is not an easy creature to catch, so we’ve made it easier for fish to do so — at least that’s what they’ll think!”

Retailing at $17.99-$24.99, the Savage Gear 3D Octopus sports a full set of lifelike tentacles, realistically molded lead head and bubble-catching ribbed surface to further mimic the dynamics of a living creature. An embedded rattle enhances the appeal by ringing the dinner bell and giving fish a sonic trail to follow in the often dim lighting of reefs, wrecks and rocky bottom.

With four eye-catching colors — purple glow, pink glow, brown glow and glow — the 3D Octopus is made in 115, 175 and 300 grams light and heavy weight size groups featuring an upwardly angled rail with a self-tuning solid line tie ring smartly positioned for a darting action that fits a cast-and-retrieve or vertical jigging presentation.

On the drop, the line tie ring pulls to the rail’s high end, so the 3D Octopus descends in a horizontal posture. Subtle movements, short rises and falls, will maintain this orientation and deliver side-to-side darting action; when it’s time to retrieve the bait, upward tension pulls the ring to the rail’s top end. This eliminates the strenuous task of pulling a heavy bait horizontally through the water column and instead turns the 3D Octopus into a vertical position.

“Because the Savage Gear 3D Octopus will work in shallow and deep environments, we wanted to equip anglers with effective options for both,” Chavez said. “The logic behind the line tie system was to make sure that the only time an angler has to strenuously reel up a heavy object is when our bait tempts a big fish into biting.”
