Fighting a locust plague amid Covid-19 in east Africa

The recent coronavirus pandemic is only exacerbating the problems currently facing herders, also known as pastoralists, in Kenya.

They’ve seen their livestock devastated and crops destroyed after the worst locust invasions in 70 years and villagers are bracing themselves for another swarm, 400 times larger if left unchecked.  With less vegetation for grazing, herders can sometimes infringe on neighbours land, causing violent conflict. We follow Josephine Ekiru, a peace-builder, who is trying to help as economic insecurity caused by the pandemic fuels attacks

This should give people some real perspective. Lockdown is not so bad in a developed nation when compared to the struggles billions face in the developing world. Hard to imagine living through this.

This is terrible. I feel for them and the livestock. I hope the government is conscious of what they spray like she said. 😔

Is there a way to deplete the locust population in the same way they’re trying with mosquitos? Releasing genetically modified locusts that are infertile

genuine question I've always wondered: when the media produces stories like this with real people that are going through real problems, do they just cut the cameras and pack up and go home??? or do they do something to help these people? like the guy who said he couldn't afford to buy another goat??? did they just cut the camera like "ok pack it up" or did they give him the money to buy the dang goat???

There’s always someone better off then us and worse off then us. Instead of being upset that others have it better, let’s have compassion for those who are worse off then us.

When people want sympathy saying they need a haircut or cannot wait until their next holiday on a cruise, I don't know how to react in a positive way. I sympathize with others instead who actually are facing real hardship during this crisis and I want to help. I feel less and less respect for anyone who only advertises their need for unnecessary and non-essential self-indulgence. As a concerned global citizen and environmentalist, I only find extra motivation during this pandemic to enact climate justice around me anyway I can. My first fight is to move towards a zero-plastic waste lifestyle.

“When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭7:13-14‬ ‭ESV‬‬
