Sonos vs Control4 — Which is Better?

Sonos Vs Control4 Audio, which is better? In this Video, I take a quick look at why you might purchase one or the other.

⚡️Custom Smart Home Design Services:

Sonos and Control4 are two very different things. Sonos is a home audio solution that was built from the ground up to be stand alone.

Whereas Control4 is a Smart Home Platform, that happens to have a native Audio solution.

As a stand-alone music solution, Sonos is very tough to beat. They offer the largest selection of Streaming services and have a very enjoyable App and user experience.

Control4 offers a smaller list of music streaming services and supports Hi Def Audio playback and streaming services for a superior listening experience. But you'll likely need to add in 3rd party sources to extend your streaming services.

The advantage with Control4 obviously is that you also get the Smart Home services included.

Sonos is ideal for smaller applications where you only need 2-3 rooms of audio. Once you move to 4 rooms of audio, Control4 becomes less expensive.

But it's still an application-driven decision. We have a Client who needs Sonos, and will be using it across 25 rooms, but will use Control4 as his Smart Home system. So we look at it on a case by case basis.

Great way of explaining the difference, one thing you should mention is that high resolution files demand a lot on your Wireless connection. That is one of the reason Sonos has kept away from Hi Res files....

Well done. Question, we have 10 rooms, macintosh audio, b&w speaks stand ups and in celling. we have control 4 and sonos, not happy with either....control 4 logic to me pick room then music.. I like to pick music then location... and I want a iPad solution only without having my installation firm come to the property each time something is added. What would be our solution for only audio, tv, streaming?

Question; What do you mean by Sonos does not support hifi / hi res audio? What about using Sonos with Tidal Service and setting it to play in hi fi mode? Are you aware of this option?

You mentioned that you weren’t talking about a play 1 or play 3 but an amplified built in Sonos system. I knew a family that had one of those about 12 years ago, but I was under the impression that now the Sonos lineup was the Sonos play 1-5, the play bar, base, sub, and connect. One of the reasons I’m hesitant to adopt in our new house is that they don’t have an in ceiling speaker. I guess my question is, what exactly kind of Sonos system are you referring to? Do they actually make more than I was aware of?

Great explanation. I have an Elan system installed and having issues with my S86 system. I'm tired of upgrading the Elan every time I have issues with it. I like the idea of wireless systems like Sonos. I'm trying to figure out if I can use the Sonos to hook into all my speaker connections in my existing rack instead of Elan. As of now the only other thing being controlled by the Elan is my TV with an Onkyo receiver amp. The rest is just music through the Elan amp and Zone switcher. So from your description, I could have something else control the TV and hook up Sonos to all my speakers. However, would that mean I would need separate Sonos amps for each zone/room? Could I use the Onkyo to provide amp and a controller to send to different rooms? Look forward to hearing your opinion.

Regardless of the system, please confirm that you will require a standalone amp for every zone you want to play independent music. Four rooms streaming four different songs will require 4 amplifiers. Is that correct?

I would like to do almost exactly what S&K wants. It would be nice to have a breakdown on what control 4 would cost if you did all those things.

Matt, you mentioned you had a client that needed audio in 25 rooms and you installed a Control 4/Sonos hybrid. Can you offer more detail? i.e., did you use 24 Sonos amps (yikes) or 3 Control 4s Triad Matrix 8 zone amps with one or more Sonos Connects (non amped) for each source? Thanks so much.

I am remodeling my current 1, 600 sqft home with a 400 sqft attached garage. I want 4 TVs in the home, whole home audio, control some lights, door locks and thermostats, have cameras and I want all of my equipment hidden in a closet. I don't want to blow my bank account on a small house either. I was looking at Smart Things with Sonos and a Harmony Hub but wondering in the long run if Control4 would be a better alternative. Any thoughts. I know your probably going to say you should use our design service, which I have been thinking about. I am in demo now and will be doing the prewire stage in about 2 weeks. Thanks for your videos!

$700 per room, you must be putting in free speakers and not charging for Labor, cause a Sonos amp is $650, its closer to $1500 per zone, please stop telling people its $700 per, thats not profitable

$650 amp
$400 for cheap speakers
$400 for Labor and wiring
