Dr. Shark Bird, M.D.
Quality Physician Wound Care:
“It’s very important to have a wound care physician seeing the patient, in addition to the nurses. The nurses provide a lot of very crucial treatment to that patient. But, there are some things that they can’t do. Only a physician or a trained clinician can do bedside debridements, removal of necrotic tissue. Which is very important to keep a wound from getting infected.”
“These patients, traditionally in the past have been shipped out to a wound care center or a hospital. But, it made more sense for the patient to be seen in their own setting. We come directly to the facility and provide the same services to the patient at the bedside.”
Bedside Physician- No Cost to Facility:
“Residents love having a physician come to see them. When they might have spent 3-4 hours in the past to go to the wound care center, now with our physician coming to them, they only have a 15-20 minute involvement. So, it doesn’t mess up their day. The nursing home benefits by having happier patients, and by reducing their costs.”
Compliant with State Regulations:
“We help with state surveys. When a state surveyor comes in and they see that a specialized wound physician is seeing that patient, it provides a much stronger case for the nursing homes themselves.”
Provides Complete Documentation & Records:
“Each week when we complete our rounds, we actually provide the documentation at that time that the primary care physician will be able to review. If there’s anything of significance on a patient, one that we’re worried about, or a patient that may have an infection that we’re concerned about, our physicians will call the primary directly to discuss that case with him.”
Wound Care Education for Nursing Staff:
“We provide a multitude of services for the nursing home. It’s not just a doctor coming to see a patient. We try to help them out in other ways as well. We provide in-services to the nursing home so their staff becomes more educated about treating wounds.”
