Tip for experiencing the true Australia; Forget Melbourne, that could be aby city in Europe. Forget Bondi Beach if you're in Sydney. It's the most over rated over hyped over priced over crowded tiniest most crowded piece of sand in Australia. Full of drunk backpackers, broke European backpacker thieves that will steal as soon as you hit the water, look at me's and please will you look at me's. Don't even bother about Byron Bay, you will be seen as nothing more than a walking dollar sign to be bled clean. Gold coast? Huh.
And if you don't want to contribute to the killing of the reef forget the barrier reef. Tourism is the major contributor to caral dieback.
Hire a car, get out of the city and head down the south coast instead of the tourist trail north full of fake Australia and fake Australians who only care about how much they can get out of you. Or drive to Sydney the coastal way up through Lakes Entrance Mallacoota into NSW and up the coast through Wollongong to Sydney. Down the unknown road you will be seen as friends and not tourists with money. There still is Australia in some places, most have slowly become 'just another tourist trap' unfortunately.
