In 2006 I was sitting in an office in Manhattan typing away at the beginning of a work week. A friend from highschool in the 90s popped into my head. I texted him suggesting he come with me to Spain that upcoming Fall. i was ready to use my newly obtained Italian dual citizenship to crash land Europe. He said he could not go. I said you never know what can happen. He responded "true" and nothing more. Saturday of that week I got a call that this friend of mine was dead at his own hands. Three days before he did it is when I had thought of him seemingly at random. The shock of that alignment convinced me to take a wild leap in the name of life. Two months later I bought a one-way ticket from NYC to Barcelona using my Italian passport. I landed in Spain September 2006 with no job or real understanding of Spanish nor Spain. I did however have the Amelie soundtrack on an mp3 player and would walk around the city center of Barcelona in the utmost of awe completely dazzled by the combination of sound and sight. That was my first time outside the US and it fractured my ego in a way that let a whole new paradigm of light reach me.
