Carbon pricing is critical in our response to climate change. Across the globe, many countries have already imposed a price on their greenhouse gas emissions with the aim to reduce them cost-effectively. Still, only about 20% of global emissions are covered by a carbon price – increasing this coverage is paramount.

Many Asian economies lie at the heart of the global trade network and are forecast to grow rapidly in the coming decades. Their increasing energy demand is also largely still met with fossil fuels, though many have significant but latent renewable energy potential. Successful carbon pricing can thus not only catalyse and facilitate regional climate action but will also spur investments into low-carbon alternatives and help mitigate costly carbon lock-in.

But what is the carbon pricing potential and readiness of these jurisdictions? How to ensure that their instruments of choice reflect the local context in their design and implementation? What factors drive or hinder successful carbon pricing?

In this webinar, policy experts from adelphi, the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) and the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) will weigh in on some of the most pressing carbon pricing opportunities and issues in the South and East Asia region. Possible with the generous support of the German Bundesumweltsamt (UBA).
