Last time I talked about Splatoon 4 I talked about smaller changes I wanted, these however are more drastic ideas I see discussed. Should any of these actually make it to Splatoon 4?

If you liked this video you might enjoy these...

I REALLY hope they don’t move to live service. I know the argument is that it could be “purely cosmetic” but I feel like the cosmetics are so integral to splatoon as a series, and paywalling the best ones would kind of kill the series for me.

Please for the love of cod I do NOT want any monetisation outside of single player DLC. I don’t want a shop to buy even skins in. Just let me pay the 60€ upfront and don’t charge me for shit after. I quite enjoy the idea of paying for a full game that gets updated over skins that I have to pay or gamble for. Live service is a slippery slope that I don’t want them to go down

2:34 Octa is NOT cooking with that take. Microtransactions are killing modern games rn. Keep them out of Splatoon, seriously.

I really don't want splatoon to go the monetized live services route, the catalogs already almost burned me out completely for amount of months we had new ones.

Adding microtransactions would honestly be the worst possible thing they could do with this game.
Not only are microtransactions just horrible in general, but customization is also a HUGE factor of what makes Splatoon so unique. Locking one of the most integral parts to this series' identity behind a paywall would fucking suck

Microtransactions would be an instant-dropping the game for me. I can't believe anyone would seriously suggest that it would be totally cool to have even just customization options as paid microtransactions when the entire series pushes customization for self expression so hard. It would be the death of the style of Splatoon. It would be Amiibo bullcrap as standard but you dont even get a little figurine for your money.

One thing you didnt really mention during the live service section is that amiibos kinda work as paid cosmetics. We see that they consistently spread them out during the lifespan, and that they are more expensive than other cosmetic options in most games, so i dont think they really need to do much more with that

One thing about the stage builder that wasn’t mentioned: player-made stages could really breathe some life into the single-player experience. Most of the time, single player content doesn’t really stay in the limelight outside the month or so after release. But giving players the Mario Maker package and the ability to make speedrunning and platforming challenges would be a huge draw for those not super interested in the PvP aspect of the game.

Please no, a F2P Splatoon as a Live service model for years of development is why most Western industry is failing.

Also we have amiibo as a sort of MXT

Live service model is a terrible idea rn considering how many others are failing rn.

Guys u don’t want splatoon to be a greedy pay to win gacha game with microtransactions that only wants money and doesn't care about the balance off the game and makes people spend $100s off dollars over time.

🚨YOU DONT WANT IT 🚨

A stage designer would be THE perfect thing for them to add like one and a half years after the games release to make sure it is good. Community made modes and maps have proven to be insanely good at keeping a game alive without much help from devs

Saying splatoon would be better as a live service game is probably the worst take I've heard about splatoon, and that's saying a *LOT*. It's emblematic of the notion that games need to keep having 'more' and 'new' and be these infinite content machines. Let games be done, it's not a 'content drought', it's called a game being finished. Suggesting microtransactions for a game that already costs full AAA price only serves to entice addiction and generate FOMO to keep people hooked, and that's not hyperbole, that's factual, there have been dozens of studies dedicated to it, heck, watch and James Stephanie Sterling video on the games industry, they've been saying the same thing since *BEFORE* the 'live service' model became the cash cow to beat money out of. It's fun to theory craft, but some ideas are just straight up harmful.

No fucking way there's people who WANT micro-transactions. That is awful.

I swear to god, I don't want splat4 to have micro transactions, it would probably stink and even if not, I just like the fact that players can have a really common experience in terms of customisation. Sometimes I play with my little nephew and I'd rather not imagine him begging for his parents' credit card bc he wants extra eyebrow options lmao

Top 5 changes for Splatoon 4:
1. Maps have flanks now
2 through 5. Missiles and Wail were killed in a back alley and are no longer in the game,

For me the main argument against going the live service route is that it's actually a much more risky strategy than most people seem to be assuming, especially now since the market is so saturated. There have been *a lot* of live service games that have failed or are in the process of failing. Anthem, Suicide Squad, Marvel's Avengers, Foanstars, Babylon's Fall, Exoprimal and dozens of other ones most of us have never even heard of. Live service is basically a gamble that if a developer creates a large enough library of content (which is all a fixed cost to them) then they can attract enough of an audience (and specifically enough players willing to pay for stuff) that it at least covers their costs. And a lot of the time it doesn't. I mean even Destiny, which was really successful for a long time, has had multiple large rounds of layoffs recently.

Which leads to another thing. There have been a ton of layoffs in the games industry in the past two years or so. While Nintendo hasn't had been completely immune (they did lay off a number of games testers earlier this year), they haven't had anything like the blood bath we've seen from other studios and publishers. I kind of think that this is at least partially due to the fact that instead of making big bets with the hope of getting as large an audience as possible, they mostly have focused on making really good games and selling them the traditional way. And it's worth noting that this model is probably healthier for the devs themselves. I know it sucks for Splatoon and Animal Crossing fans but the people working on these games are almost certainly better off being able to switch between a different series in a completely separate genre every few years (also real talk, if Nintendo was going to pursue live service then Animal Crossing would be a much better candidate than Splatoon).

Splatoon 4 should have a causal and ranked mode instead of turf and ranked.

This way casuals can play the ranked modes without fear of losing rank, and rank could become a more serious kind of matchmaking system.

Also NEW MODE

If the s4 maps have good flanks, I'd love to see a capture the flag type gamemode that's like the reverse of rainmaker, you're trying to get into the enemy base and then take something to mid. Probably not just one 'flag' though, somewhere between clams and rain, maybe you pick up one of four sprinklers of doom so you have some passive paint around you but you have rainmaker speed and are easily visible, but you still have your main and sub weapon.

I also think it could give an interesting dynamic where if you die with it or it stays on the ground for like 5 seconds it resets, but you can throw it to teammates so there's a sorta soccer-like 'passing' system. There could even be a penalty for attempting to get a flag to mid without succeeding, like you get a 5 point handicap every time and then you score 10 points each time you get one to mid or something
