BEKAS opens in cinemas in NZ from June 6.

A heart-warming story of two homeless brothers attempting to achieve the impossible dream, the beautifully shot Bekas -- which means 'parentless', presents an intriguing childlike perspective of Kurdistan, Iraq, in the early 1990s. The young brothers are struggling with the day-to-day survival of living on the streets, when one day, they catch a glimpse of Superman through a hole in the wall at the local cinema. At this pivotal moment in their young lives, they decide they will go to America and live with Superman, who will be able to solve all of their problems, protect them and punish everyone who has been mean to them; at the top of this list, is Saddam Hussein.

To get to America, they will need money, passports, transportation and a way to get across the border; a journey which is fraught with literal and psychic danger. In the face of this adversity, they put together every dinar they have and buy themselves food, water and a donkey, called Michael Jackson. On the road a new adventure begins; they lose and find each other again, meet new friends and foes and eventually they have no other choice but to put their destiny in the hands of greedy and ruthless smugglers in order to get across the border.
