The Rojava Film Commune is a collective based in Rojava, West-Kurdistan, in northern Syria.
As our armed forces of the YPG and YPJ defend our communities against ISIS, they do not stand alone in the protection of our communities and our cultures. The Rojava Film Commune, part of The Democratic Culture And Art Movement, recognizes culture's responsibility in defending and claiming our freedom. We compose our songs, revive our folk dances, draw paintings and carve statues. And for our children, most of whom haven’t watched a theatre play ever, we will make plays inspired by our own folk stories. We will reconstruct our society and our imagination in pursuit of freedom. We shall not allow the cinema to be simplified to become an industrial tool, or a consumable and exhaustible object. Our vibrant streets will be our film sets. The squares of our villages will become our cultural centers. Our factories and restaurants will become our cinema halls.
