TRIO: Helping First Generation College Students

If you’re the first person in your family to attend college, it can be very difficult to navigate the process of choosing a college, applying for admission and figuring out how to pay for it. It can also be a challenge for many students once they get to college. That’s why the federal TRIO programs are so important, helping students in Vermont and throughout our country prepare for, and succeed at college. At a time when a college degree is more important than ever to secure a job in our changing economy, we must fight to make sure college is accessible to every student who desires to continue their studies, no matter their background.

Trio was a huge support system for me last school year when I went back to college, after dropping out more than 14 years ago.

I am a USMC OIF\OEF\OND combat vet.
I used a TRIO program, Veterans Upward Bound, when I started college. It was a *HUGE* help for me.
I have since graduated with a BS in Computer Science.

Healthcare is a right, education is a right, housing is a right. How do these so called capitalists expect people to work when they have none of the three? Public transport is also a sort of mini right. And we need more government unions to manage all of these to keep the corporate interests out.

I find it annoying that they just say college. I started at a community College studying computer administration and networking. I decided to switch majors in 2004 to follow my passion and study anthropology. I wanted to be like a Malcolm Gladwell or Yuval Noah Harriri. Instead personal issues made me take a break after getting a Ba. With the student debt crisis and the o8 financial crisis I never went back. My degree was worthless. I sent thousands and thousands of CVs. I spent the next several years sleeping in cars, being dependent on a physically abusive girlfriend, living on people's couches. Eventually I land a job in construction which I hated but paid OK. Not all college degrees are equal. It's not okay ot preach this shit. I lived anthropology and for it am an immensely richer person than the average business or tech major. In the other hand to quote George Carlin in regards to business elites, "they got you by the balls". If you can't get them to hire you and you can't make a living not much else matters. And study any tribe from anywhere from any historical period and anthropology will tell you the same. So please stop telling people go to college. It seriously fucked up my life. People need stem degrees. It's wrong and a sign we live in a cultural dark age, but just the way it is.

I am lucky, in europe public college fees do not or very rarely surpass 2000$/Year. You should put alot of cash into education, to lower the price of studies for poor and middle-class families. I believe you can do it!
