Ear Training Lesson 4 - Ear Training Practice Lesson called "Moving Triads." This is Ear Training Practice Lesson 4 of 7. In this video I want you to simply sing the Root Position, 1st Inversion and 2nd Inversion Triads off of the same Bass Note. In my demonstration I play the note C an sing a C Major Triad (Root Position), Ab Major Triad (1st Inversion) and an F Major Triad (2nd inversion). I move through all 12 notes at random. Do this lesson each day as part of the series of seven all in a row. It should take about 15 minutes to do them all. Each on will become more difficult as we go along. Good Luck!

Tips:1. For the 1st inversion, make sure you have the sound of a minor 3rd and a perfect 4th clear in your head, because coming from the chord in root position your ears will battle to make you think the first note you hear is the root. This is done easily by singing the famous Brahms baby lullaby. After several tries and many fails you will start to train your brain to break from the first chord into the sound of the first inversion.
2. For the 2nd inversion, all you have to do is sing Taps, which is the bugle trumpet call they play at military funerals.

This exercise in minor would be great too.

Hi Rick! It would be cool if you u could do an EAR Training lesson applying all these concepts into real pieces of music. I would love to see your approach on that

Hello Rick, this exercise is super cool, thank you! Do you think you could also do a similar one for Minor, Augmented and Diminished Triads at some point? Thanks again! :)

It's interesting that what you get with this exercise is a effectively a I-bVI-IV progression, which you can hear in Nirvana's Territorial Pissings or the end of Starship Trooper by Yes.

Hi Rick, thanks so much for these amazing lessons! I am a drummer and percussion instructor in schools ( 11 years) but I've been learning piano and composition later in life (since I was 29) for the last 6 years because I am applying to study a masters in film composition next year. In this, I have been teaching myself ear training for the first time and although I think I am quite slow considering I have done it most days on the way to work for around 15 months, I find this quite easy . I just use 'be our guest' from beauty and the beast for first inversion major triads and 'doxy' by sonny rollins for second inversion. I wanted to ask if you think this is not really the true way to do it as i'm not doing it judging by the 'quality of the sound' and doing it instantly, I'm taking a second or two to hear the song first, then singing. I heard that is a good way to start, then move on to judging by the quality of the sound but can I ask what you think? P.s. I'm also teaching myself jazz and to improvise on piano now on top of learning studio production for my film compositions and although I think I try to do too many music things, it's amazing to see someone who has such a great hand at all these skills. I find it truly inspirational and hope I can be somewhere similar in the hopefully, not too distant future. Thanks again!!

I'd use different starting notes, cos otherwise you can remember the sound of I bVI IV progression, it becomes familiar.

this exercise can also be done in the minor. So starting with root it´s C Eb G, C E A, C F Ab. Try it, it´s fun!

The progression of chords in this reminds me of the outro of "Starship Trooper" by Yes. Great vid. I've been struggling hearing inversions, and this is a very unique way of viewing them. Love your vids!

Hi, Rick. I'm not sure but i think studying the same chord of inversions. The 1st inversion of C chord is 'mi-sol-do' but you are studying 'do-mi-la' and this is 1st inversion of A minor chord. I think that if we are studying the same chord of inversions, we can develop musical perception of own ear about this chord. And thanks for your lessons.

I got stuffed up when I did the 'first inversion' because I ended up singing the first inversion of the relative minor triad. e.g. Root CEG 1st CEA 2nd CFA, do you get what I mean ? Your second 'inversion' is, in the cycle of fifths, more removed from the starting note and a more unrelated key but once you get it it is just a matter of remembering to go to the minor third for the first note of the second inversion chord. An excellent exercise.

Say what are some more tips to hear the difference of these inversions? For example am I going to hear certain interval such a 3rd in 2nd inversion etc. or do I just need to memorize what the sounds?

Why the hell can I only sing a perfect 4th when I'm singing the root before . When I'm not singing the root first I'm always wrong haha

Once you start hearing it as a chord progression it gets pretty easy! Maybe randomize the order after this? This is fun!
