They went 4-8 last year without a head coach, without a qb, with a large buy-in deficit from many players on the squad and lead both Iowa and Rutgers late in those contests (and would’ve won them but for Ross Els’ ATROCIOUS special teams operation). Middle of their schedule this season is tough but not impossible (could get a win vs Iowa and/or UMich depending on the circumstances), and the rest of the schedule is lacking in GUARANTEED wins but still entirely comprised of winnable games. Barring catastrophic injury at the qb or ol positions, it would be legitimate failure for Smith and the Spartans to not get over 4.5 wins.
