1603 - The Santa Catarina Incident

In 1603, just off the coast of modern-day Changi, the Dutch violently captured a Portuguese merchant ship. The expensive yield was testament to the potential of trade in this region. The incident also sparked the realisation that there was a need for treaties in international waters.
