G Major Jazz Backing Track | Medium Swing 1-6-2-5

This jam track is ideal for beginners and anyone learning jazz improvisation. It is a medium swing jazz play-along for improvising on that classic jazz progression - the 1-6-2-5 - in the key of G major.

-----------------------------------------

Tempo = 120 BPM

I - VI7 - IIm7 - V7

II: G I E7 I Am7 I D7 :II

You will hear extended versions of these basic chords on the track... as is common in jazz of course :)

In theory, you can play G major scale over all the chords, except the E7 where you'd switch to A harmonic minor.

Scales:

G Major - G A B C D E F#

A Harmonic Minor - A B C D E F G#

Arpeggios:

G arpeggio = G B D

E7 arpeggio = E G# B D

Am7 arpeggio = A C E G

D7 arpeggio = D F# A C

Playing G Major scale will result in G Ionian (G chords), A Dorian (Am7 chords) and D Mixolydian (D7 chords) - all the same 7 notes...

NOTE: It's only a two note difference between G major scale and A harmonic minor scale - as the G becomes G# and the F# becomes F - the rest of the 7 notes stay the same.... easy!!

Next up, I'd recommend trying out some more advanced colours on the dominant chord (D7/D13) by using the

D diminished 1/2-1 tone scale = D Eb F F# G# A B C

And you can also try out the Altered Scale (Superlocrian) on E7!

E Superlocrian Mode - E F G G# Bb C D

I've never used a backing track before, this is pretty awesome. I'm still learning piano and so far I've mostly learned blues scales, this works wonderfully with them!

I like to play along this backtrack very much, really relaxing. I just play funny notes and have fun (can't sound good though). When my neighbors ask me what was that I say - jazz. Now all my neighbors hate jazz.

Absolutely love this! I’m p insecure to be a sax player who knows so little about improv so this is a nice place to start. I had a lot of fun! I’m going to come back here time and time again :) as a note to my self and other saxophonists (if they need it) - for alto sax it’s in E major

How significant it is that this cat plays like this and isn't a jazz snob :) In the 70's a few guitarists in our jamming circle went off to Berklee School of Music, came back and wouldn't play anything we used to we'd loved jamming on Robin Trower, Allman Brothers, Frank Zappa, Herbie Hancock, Dixie Dregs, Santana, Blue Oyster Cult, Stanley Clarke, Jeff Beck, etc., but the Berklee down their noses from their lofty places, if it wasn't in the key of H and jam-packed with (X)mmaj7b9b11b13aug+9sus2 chords, they don't even leave the house for less than now, since my birth in 1958, when my jazz bassist father was playing clubs in NYC, I'd grown up among world-class jazz I've seen the spectrum of attitudes. Something that always boggled my mind was jazz players for whom jamming over a Latin vamp was so boring they'd take the chance to show the crowd how sophisticated their syncopation and modulation skills were, at times nearly causing train wrecks. So far out of pocket, so flashy, but don't care where the "1" is of the next measure. Pocket is all that matters, but to so many jazz players, it's all about proving how far "above" everyone else they are. I never listened to Grand Funk they were balked at. Only in recent years did I discover what a phenomenal amount of talent they have.
in terms of "humble", this Quist cat is the epitome of it. "Humble" means not the newly displaced alpha dog baring his throat to the new alpha, but "teachable". If you listen to the breadth and depth of styles in his libraries, "teachable" is an understatement :)

This is so awesome dude! I did not know that I can play jazz with my soprano saxophone! It's like you are a musician helping other musicians discover new things from themselves! Thanks dude whoever you are! 😊

This is so helpful when learning how to just bust out solos by using your ear to what sounds good.

I loved it. There's nothing quite as nice as getting into a sweet little jazz melody early in the morning.

This is the perfect backing track, especially for guitar. All natural notes for the frets excelt for f# and all the chords are also beginner shapes. Any chromatics (wrong notes) flow seamlessly. Keep listening and playing and doing random intervals and trying to come up with phrases and you'll become a jazz pro in no time as long as you can play in more keys
