i feel like the second part, the reason the sandbag didnt tank all the shots is because height difference. usually i build tank traps because pathfinding sometimes destroy my own sandbags especially in the midst of battle.

Sandbags aren't very useful in protecting caches and stationary arty / pak 43/ B-4 because they have a larger target size which means there's a higher chance shots won't scatter hitting the sandbag and instead just go straight for the gun or cache itself.
It does however still help if the shots do scatter and can help soak 1-2 more shots as demonstrated but this is not 100% consistent. You might not want to do this in a 1v1 unless your engineers aren't doing anything else like laying mines, wiring cover, repairing other stuff, etc. But in larger team games this can come in clutch in certain situations and save you your cache or arty.

dont save your caches... just dont build them. in 90% situations is a step back for your chanse to victory. Build army when y hit 90 popcap just start thinking about caches other way NO
