Bless you. My late brother (1960 - 2012) had Down Syndrome. I also have a 22-year-old nephew by marriage with DS. Both of them have loved their families and friends, learned to read and write at a low level in public school systems in different states, relished long-term hobbies (Boy Scouts and bowling for my brother, snow-boarding in and out of Special Olympics for my nephew), have dated (my brother was a ladies man who was always complimenting the females, young and old) and have been employed under supervision. Their lives have been happier than that of most "normal" people, and have had far less suffering than various dear friends of mine have faced in difficult lives. The one way my brother's trisomy caused him to suffer was that his young intellectual/emotional age made it difficult for him to cope with the death of our parents; a similar sorrow may be faced in the future by my nephew. But both of these men led/have led lives worth living! My brother was one of the most loving people I have known, and I am glad to have had him as my sole sibling. My nephew has an argumentative streak, but also has much affection in him. I rejoice I have known both of them, and sorrow that this genocide of special people is taking place in the so-called developed world.

Ally, thank you for sharing so vulnerably about your family! It is such a gift to see people standing up for every human life. I tutored a young girl with Downs for a bit, and she brought a lot of joy into my life. I wouldn't trade that for the world! Keep up the good work. :)
