👉 A stench fills the cafeteria at the besieged Hong Kong campus where some anti-government protesters were believed to remain holed up as the stalemate with police continues.
Police teams Thursday began clearing the university that was a flashpoint for clashes with anti-government demonstrators, as the government slammed the U.S. for a new law supporting human rights in the Chinese territory.
The move into the Polytechnic University came after its administration said it believed no one else remained inside after a two-day search ended Wednesday. Faculty teams found only a young woman in weak condition and a stockpile of dangerous items including gasoline bombs and corrosive liquid.
Hours before the police operation, a masked protester came out of hiding and told reporters there were fewer than 20 others holed up inside.
The university has been ringed by police for 11 days as protesters retreated to the campus after blocking a major tunnel and set toll booths on fire during clashes with police. Some 1,100 protesters have left or have been arrested.
Protests erupted in Hong Kong in June over the local government's plans to allow some criminal suspects to be extradited to the Chinese mainland.
Hong Kong withdrew the bill in September, but the street protests have continued, with the demonstrators fearing Beijing is preparing to water down Hong Kong's democracy and autonomy, nearly 30 years before the ex-British colony's "special status" expires
