Once I had kids, I realized how smart my mum was! Now that I'm 60 and she has been gone for many years, I have come to realize how much was wisdom! She was the most intelligent and interesting woman I ever didn't know! We never got along because I reminded her of my father but in the last 3 weeks of her life I was the only one she wanted to look after her, to bath her and to hold her at night. We reconciled a lifetime of misunderstandings and fell in like with each other. I will grieve for the rest of my days for the years I wasted running away from this wonderful powerhouse. She will. Be at my birthday party in heaven because of her prayers for the child she never understood.

Mark Twain he knew how to quest. He was in the admirable pursuit of knowledge since a very young age. He was the ice-breaker of sorts for many of the modern-day American points of interests and cross-cultural intersections.

Was he being funny.
He says how much the old man learned in 7 years. Not himself.
So to me it seems it would mean he was able to get drunk with his dad and got onto his level that way.

I think a lot of people in the comments missed the joke by not realizing he said the old man had learned.
