The default display controller in the emulator is a first generation display controller -- eg, 7011 (80x24 CRT controller). This display controller doesn't have the box graphics overlays nor the alternate character sets that the game expects. You need to configure the emulator to use the MXD terminal mux, which then has 1 to 4 attached intelligent terminal emulators - that terminal emulation understands the escape codes to use the alternative graphics set and the display attributes (blinking, bright, reverse video) and box graphics.

In the menu bar, pick the "Configure" menu item, remove the keyboard and CRT controller I/O devices at 001 and 005, then create a MXD terminal mux at /000. Hitting "OK" will cause a reboot, and then everything should work OK.
