These kinds of stories need to be told in mainstream America. This is rich history that benefits all races. This is beautiful.

Oh my goodness, when the gentleman spoke about hugging a tree on the property and thinking that quite possibly his ancestors also hugged the same tree was incredibly moving. And then when the stones that were grave markers were found it was so emotionally charged it created such feelings almost like I was right there with them. How incredible for this family to find a house where the whole family could gather for celebrations but a gift from God bringing them back to the beginning of their families story. What a gift! ❤️🥰❤️

This story is amazing!! This should be written into a movie with no fiction added. The truth is intriguing enough. Just wow!! Great reporting by Ms Stahl and Mr Miller and his family were such a delight!!

My mother is a Miller from Gladys Virginia, my father is a Womack from Chatham Virginia. This story has tears running down my face, these could very well be my relatives. My heart is racing right now, so many questions.

The green vine with little purple flowers in Vinca minor, commonly called myrtle or life everlasting. It can be found around old gravesites across the American east as it is evergreen and planted to cover graves. You can find old graveyards in wooded areas by tracing this vine, just as you can find old homesites by finding daffodils in the spring.

History must never be whitewashed or erased. Without knowing our history we can never learn from it. And while this is the particular history of one proud family, it is also our history as American citizens and this moved me as if it was my own immediate family for we all essentially have the same DNA. God bless the Millers and thank you for sharing your story with us and thank you 60 Minutes for telling it so respectfully.

In regards to the cemetery, pay attention to the shape of the grave markers (oval shaped grave markers suggesting seeing eye paying homage to West African spiritual traditions), the directions the grave markers face, the trees (don’t cut them down) - they are purposefully there. Pay attention to the plants - yucca was commonly planted in historic African American cemeteries/graveyards.Rose bushes. The cemetery appears to have been marked within a cluster of trees - that was purposeful. In some African (American) cemeteries, the enslaved believed in leaving one’s grief in the cemetery and not disturbing the trees, which were considered sacred as well and all-knowing and perhaps protectors of sorts of the deceased. Sometimes objects were left behind and buried with the dead that spoke to the kind of lives they led. This sacred ground of is speaking. You just have to be able to decode the spiritual language.

This story makes me think of the Bible verse that says “Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who finds great delight in his commands. His children will might be mighty in the land; The generations of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. Psalm 112

Beautiful to see that this family is happy, huge, thriving, and blessed!

I know, this doesn't seem to be connected but.. 10 years ago I took a bus through Harlem, ManHattan, to New Jersey bridge. Being a Dutchee on a visit, I did not know that I had to pay in coins, and presented a 1 dollar bill. Upon which the driver said that it had to be coins and did not move the bus. There were some in my purse but not enough. Then a voice behind me said, woman please take this coin and let's get moving. Looking behind I saw the whole bus was occupied by black people, smiling at me. I loved that moment :-) Amazing Miller story, got chicken goose bumps! Ancesters do not give up to let you know where you come frome.

This was an amazing story…I really enjoyed it and even more so loved the people involved in finding out their family history. I was actually tearing up at the gravesite that was basically non-existent. To find relatives that you didn’t know and now how have a pathway to their family tree, quite happy for the entire family. Much happiness in your pursuit of your relatives. Seems like it’s coming full circle. Much luck to you.
