How Hoyte van Hoytema shot NOPE

NOPE is one of my favourite films of the year, and possibly my favourite film from Jordan Peele, although I haven’t seen Get Out in a while. The expansive use of IMAX, technical aspect of shooting Day for Night and distinct look that is becoming recognizable for Jordan Peele's work, all lie on the shoulders of one man, Hoyte van Hoytema, and of course, his team.

So in today’s video, I’ll be covering the equipment Hoytema used, how he created a new technique to shoot Day for Night, and how Jordan Peele’s look has developed from Get Out to US to NOPE.

As always if you have a recommendation for an analysis, let me know below!

Timeline:
00:00 Introduction
00:48 Equipment
03:52 Day-For-Night
06:17 The Look
07:55 Conclusion

Music:
Morning Mood - Grieg
Dreams Become Real - Kevin MacLeod
Maestro - Tlakaelel
Maryandra's Waltz - Jesse Gallagher
Waltz of the Flowers - Tchaikovsky

I did not know this movie was entirely in daylight that’s insane what people can do to make it look like it’s night, great movie

overlaying IR over a film on post to achieve the detail is Ingenious. Spectacular!

Hoyte Van Hoytema is this generations Roger Deakins. Though different in style, they just know their way behind a damn camera and after watching one of their films, you’re left a bunch of iconic shots that just stay with you after the film and you could watch them over and over. Good stuff. Damn.

Thanks for this video. Such an amazing movie experience from medium, cinematography, colour grading, acting, and so much more.

The original story is what I enjoyed the most. In a time of sequels, reboots and way too many superhero movies this was a breath of fresh air.

Recommendation: the stellar cinematography of Goodbye First Love, and other films shot by Stephane Fontaine, such as Elle and Jackie. I just watched Rust and Bone, shot by him. It seems the memorable shot from A Star Is Born with the camera mounted to the tour bus might have been inspired by a shot in that film.

Another good video, perfect timing because I've just recently seen this film.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer will be amazing. Especially when you have a legend like Hoyte van Hoytema.

You made your video slightly confusing by quoting from Van Hoytema at 4:41 and again at 5:39. van Hoytema talks about using 35mm cameras, but that is because he is describing when he did this Day for Night for the first time to simulate the moon in another movie, Ad Astra (hence he says he only used a 35mm film camera). van Hoytema's quote about later using the same technique for Nope actually starts at 5:44, when he says he scaled it up and used an Arri 65 and a Panavision 65.

There was scene during night early in movie in which it hit me it was shot in daylight. Under OJ's hat u could see hard shadow on his face which shouldn't be there during night. But otherwise it's best day for night I've seen. Also great video
