I will let you in on a secret mo chara. Ireland is a socialist republic and we want it that way, we don't want an American system as there is just not enough people to have a strong capitalist country so socialism works for us, at the moment our Government is trying to change the way we live by making us more like America, paying for healthcare, water, housing tax etc, we don't want that, if we had that system when I was young my mother would be dead today. Socialism works if done the right way.

You maybe from America but if you have Irish heritage you will all ways be welcomed in Ireland, as they say we have a soft spot for our American Brothers and sisters and we're proud of how our peoples thrived in the states :) If you ever come to Ireland I'll meet up with you for a few beers :) Show you how to drink haha Connolly and Larkin gave us our unions and workers rights. Something we never had so we look at these men with pride, plus he gave his life for the cause a very noble thing.

I stopped drinking when they invented the funnel, and quit funneling when they invented the pump!

Oops My bad Connolly is listed after I hit the "Show More" tab. I will say of James that although I think his ideology abysmal, I think of him with respect ( He was willing to die for a free Ireland ) and freedom is worth having. Ireland and America are tied by blood - we may have been forced to leave, but never have forgot home - even several generations later!

What are your thoughts on De Valera, from what I remember I liked him.

Sorry the last comment got jostled, I believe "Capatalism" is the wrong term for the American system. We are a "Free Market Economy" which means anyone with innovation and skill can succeed.

I don't see James Connolly listed, even though that doesn't break my heart as he did favor Marxism. A funny thing that being born American and having lived life with the freedoms that are enjoyed here, I was not or ever be a fan of Marx! My personal wish, is that one day the Republic will view the "American" success of the past and adopt some of our ways. I only want to see Ireland become what it deserves to be - A united country with a stable economy and future generations enjoying prosperity!

Capitalism is a dangerous game as it gives people the chance of so called Morganization of companies, Socialism means everyone gets the same rights and it SHOULD be impossible for complete takeovers of a market, but Ireland has got corrupt governments and they gave the impression of being socialists while they robbed our country, but that is changing the real socialists of this country will gain power off the back of corruption, Type in Anglo tapes and listen to them they are what woke Ireland.

:) I realized as soon as I hit post! And remembered one of my arguments concerning the state of affairs here in the States. You see our government is doing the opposite, which in a country of 300, 000, 000 is idiotic. And I guess here I am a capitalist, but if I lived there I would be likewise a socialist. I do know of the challenges of growing up poor, my mother raised me on a waitresses wages.
