The Girl Guides of Canada has announced it will be renaming its Brownies branch to be more inclusive. 'We heard from girls and from former members and current members that the name caused them harm,' said Jill Zelmanovits, the organization's CEO.

They were called brownies and their vests are brown, at least in the US, so how would this make it not inclusive? You get to wear a brown vest, therefore you’re included. This is just ridiculous.

They aren't called Brownies because they wear brown uniforms. They wear brown uniforms because they're called Brownies. The origin of the term is Gaelic. A brownie was a helpful household spirit that came out at night while the family was asleep and did chores. It is a mythical, magical creature. It is a word that never had anything to do with skin color or race. Unfortunately, there's no explaining that to some people. "I don't care about context or the origin of the word. The name of your organization hurts my feelings and makes me feel excluded."

Brownies were named after the elvish creatures who came out at night and did household chores for people. Was it the elves who complained?

Brownies is from Scottish and English folklore meaning " Helpful Elf" How is this not inclusive. People need to get their head out of the sand and not listen to those who live in a world of always being a victim. Canada is becoming the fool of the world. No wonder no one joins any organization or service. It is all about my feelings.

Brownies are creatures from Scottish folklore. How about educating people instead of changing names? There is nothing wrong with the name Brownies. I was in Brownies and no one ever had issue with the name. Even those who didn't know the fairy reason just thought it was a reference to the uniform.

I am offended on behalf of all Scottish elve's. Change the name back as I am a minority and want to be included. Question... why are my feelings ignored? Why does my opinion not count? What will be done about the unjust treatment of a mythical Scottish elf?

Does that mean we can no longer say “great white North” to describe Canada’s Arctic?

Next they're going to apologize for the girl guide cookies being only brown and white.

This is very informative. I learned parents should keep their daughters out of this organisation because they're gutless and bowed down to the crazies. Thanks

One could mistake this for an onion skit....

Embers could be triggering to burn victims. Comets sounds like a roller derby name.

why not change the name to NICES (National Inclusive Club Eliminating Sterotypes) or maybe from Brownies to Karens?

I wonder who felt excluded? The colour of the uniform and the history behind the name make it pretty clear it has precisely Nothing to do with skin colour. What weird times we're living in. I guess the name (and, or course, the words) of the song "White Christmas" need to be changed immediately as How about "Snowy Holiday Time" .... "I'm dreaming of a snowy 😞

This is why I will never attend George Brown College or watch another Charlie Brown Christmas special. Oh sorry, I didn't mean to say Christmas. I meant " that day in December when the post office is closed "
