Chinese Diesel Heater Tube Test - Which is better?

For a few years now, I have been using a standard dryer vent hose to get the heat from my Chinese Diesel Heater into my rooftop tent. A friend of mine mentioned trying an insulated hose to go from the heater to the tent because I was possibly losing heat. This test goes into that subject and the results might be surprising. For some reason (I am by no means an engineer lol!) the insulated hose read HOTTER than the dryer vent hose that wasn't insulated... weird. The output (had a memory issue there - whoops!) was different, too. You'd like to think the insulated hose blew hotter out of the end but the results were about 30-50 degrees LOWER than the dryer hose! So which hose am I keeping and why? Spoiler alert! It's the black insulated one. The main reason why is simple... it packs down SO much smaller than the bulky dryer hose. When it comes to overlanding and overland travel, space is always at a premium. So the fact that this hose packs down so much more than the other one outweighs the fact that it is less efficient than the silver one. 150 degrees output vs. 180 degrees is still plenty to keep me warm in the winter camping season.

Those thermometers give different readings depending on how reflective the surface is. So shiny will read less etc.

To pack these hoses, i took a piece of 2" pvc pipe cut 2 foot long, drilled a 7/16 hole on both ends straight thru both sides of the pvc, about 1" from the end. Then put a 6" long, 3/8" threaded rod thru the holes sticking out both sides. The hose will be stored between the 2 threaded rods. One end got a nut on both sides of the rod, tightened eight down to the pvc, centering the rod to stick out equally on both sides. Stand the pipe up toward the ceiling, putting both feet on the rod with nuts, holding it upright. Grab your hose, slowly feed it onto the pvc, push down to collapse it far enough to imsert the other threaded rod thru the top hole. The hose will expand, pushing against the threaded rods, keeping the loose rod tight in the pvc. Now the hose is 2 foot long, on a sturdy mount, easily transported

I bought a similar black hose, 6 meters long, 18 US dollars. The hose was 80 mm, so I bought a reducer and hose clamp, 6 dollars, I am very satisfied, now I get the heat from the basement up into the house easily! Brand on hose "Sterr" (from UK) I live in Sweden

If you want a true temperature comparison. Paint the pipes matte black then retest the temperatures infrared on shiny surfaces is no good

lazer pointer temp guages dont work well with reflective surfaces and give false readings, youd be better off painting the reflective surfaces black to get a more accurate reading.

I use a 3i nch insulated dryer hose. Its 3inch i.d., but almost 6' o.d. the outside of my hose reads 10°f warmer than the room temperature.

Those black Chinese ducts have a toxic smell that doesn’t go away. Would avoid at all costs.

I tried the expandable dryer vent that was plastic on the outside and it stunk like burnt plastic and melted where it was mounted to the heater. Don't use it. It's sopposed to be good for 300 degrees? Bullshit. Get something like aluminum or the cardboard that comes with the heater.

I bet it either would be Hotter if you shut the door and put the exhaust outside through a small hole. Feeding cold air doesn't help😅
