Buying a Car Doesn't Have to Suck™

Says GOING to auctions to preview cars is old school and out of touch, then goes on to explain why previewing the car in person is STILL a great idea.

Either go to the auctions yourself or find a buyer to do it for you! Today buying the right cars is a full-time job!

A used car dealer is surprised another used car dealer (auction) is shady. The reputation of this industry is horrible. Just because you are trying to do a better job in the industry, doesn't mean everyone else is suddenly operating on the up and up.

As someone that installs window film and PPF, don’t fall for the bs certificate or being certified. That’s not a thing as there is no standard or accreditation process.

Condition reports are bogus at all auctions. Start going to live auction as soon as possible. Buying online is one of the worst things you can do.

I’d never buy a car without looking at it first. It blows my mind that people will buy from EBay sight unseen.

The car business is shady, proceed with caution and trust no one.

A lot of people, don't understand that if a dealership, rental company, or private shop or citizen repairs a vehicle on their own, out of their own pocket, that repair will NEVER show up on any CarFax / VIN repair reporting organization, it just goes to show you can't trust a clean Carfax without inspecting the car, when you clearly notice things being off about a car, like Mike clearly pointed out on this Mazda.

I know doing the auction online is a thing today. BUT there's just no substitute for seeing a car in person. I don't how many cars I've looked at online and then went to see in person. They NEVER look as good in person. They either do b t take a photo of everything or the imperfections don't show up in the photos.

Don't wanna hear about NEW AGE in buying cars. Used to have one rule, don't go look at a car to buy in the rain. If your not looking at the vehicle yourself in person you are absolutely doing it WRONG and have nobody to blame but yourself. BTW, 40yrs experience here

I was a whole used car buyer for a dealership in 21 and 22 and I solely did in person inspections before making offers. You gotta be in the car right to try to make money on it but also, if there are parts back orders that costs you money to try to repair because now it’s depreciating while you’re trying to figure out what to do. The most money you’ll make on a vehicle is in the first two weeks after getting it, so you need to recon ASAP. The more to fix, the more you put yourself at the mercy of the parts market.

Sorry this happened to you Mike. Keep the pressure on them and hopefully this headache will get resolved…

Mike, I can only remark that I am NOT a dealer or a buyer from an auction facility BUT Manheim Cincinnati is in my back yard. I use to work for the original owner and just as an observer would NEVER buy from a car auction without hands on. I now, old school but i've seen the trickery in selling these auction cars.

Ok, the word of the day is now "Flabbergasted". You only lost $500 but that may have been money well spent to avoid this particular auction company for the future!

Lets go back to the days of exposing and holding companies accountable. Blast the company name, let the internet army do what we do best.

Mike most Dealers. Including me. Still gotta check the cars out in person. Especially at manhiem. Or you will get burned.

Just checking in, hoping everything is ok with you. I have not seen a video in almost a month so just a little worried. Hope all is well and you are selling tons of cars!

23yrs in the business and your ahead of the curve. You might want to go back to that last intersection and pick up a few more things before going any further down that road. You should have learned this stuff your first couple years in the industry. Heck I could have told you, you can't trust those auction houses back in 1995 when I stopped playing with them. I'm happy to be on this side of that curve, with my money still in my pocket. Chalk it up to education.

This is a good example of why a dealer is entitled to a reasonable profit. Dealers get ripped off just the same as people do.
