They better learn to start using the door buttons because I can't stand when I'm on a nice and cool train in summer and they just open the doors and let the air conditioning escape.

...well, looks like I was wrong.

I took the first D Set from Central to Hornsby today. It felt magical, like a dream. Like I thought I time travelled to 2025 to ride it. I was the kid holding up an "Unemployment and D Sets" sign.

Very comprehensive overview Elliot .. thank you! Very keen to check these out for myself next time I’m in Sydney. As you suggest, it’s a pity some people have formed strong opinions about these sets despite not having stepped foot on one.

Got the chance to take the D Set and I would also give it a 9/10 for the same reasons as you mentioned. I did notice the PIDS in the carriages didn't adjust to the train running ~10 minutes late right before Woy Woy (running back up Central Coast). The time arriving at each station stayed the same as the timetabled times (eg: Newcastle Interchange 1:53 despite it running late).

Just back from visiting family from uk and finally travelled on this train, been a long wait watching them in the sidings with the wrappers on for years, worth the wait, time there was somewhere for luggage.

Finally they stuck their fingers out and put this thing into service! Those tables remind me of the ones on the Vlocity trains in Melbourne.

As someone outside of Sydney I’m excited for the XPT replacements. I hope to all goodness they are good.

The XPT is fine but the chargers and things will be amazing.

It was great to see your report and a view of the new D sets. I remember taking a picture of the "new then" V set coming through Homebush station, back in the 70s, and that distinct hum that made them sound so futuristic. 😊

The stairs are virtually identical to the Comeng Tangara Project from the 1980s that never eventuated. I personally recommend to BYO Seat Cushion as the seats were very hard and my backside became numb after 2 1/2 hours. This train will annoy the Commuters travelling from the Blue Mountains due to lack of seating.

Man, I can just feel how much hype everyone had for these trains. They look awesome. Sadly, im not in Sydney currently as I dont live there. But, when I get across the ditch next time I visit, I'll definitely give these trains a shot!

Edit: like you previously mentioned, the only con is the muffled and fuzzy announcements that are hard to hear. They will certainly need to fix this for people with vision impairments ASAP. However, yes this train look INSANE.

I HATE IT!! I DON'T LIKE IT!! I ABSOLUTELY HATE to admit that I was wrong. The stairs are definitely not as steep as other trains. I reserve my opinion on seat comfort because my rear end is considerably wider than yours. I do like the tray tables as I will have something to rest my unhealthy munchies on instead of my non existent lap. I can't reverse my opinion on non reversible seating because that would mean total capitulation. However, I may have to concede defeat eventually, especially after my much loved Vsets are no more than a memory which could be about the same time that I am no more than a memory 😅. I agree with your rating of the Dset but a 4.5 for the Vset is a travesty 😢. This is a wonderful video. Well done Elliott 👍👏

That’s nuts how the D sets PIDS (Passenger Information Display Screen) can tell how long it will take until the following stops

Those very wide doors are going to be interesting in the middle of winter on the Blue Mountains line.
