Lower Loon - U72 - Approach and Landing (Idaho backountry) HD

Landing at Lower Loon - U72 - airstrip in the Idaho backcountry with my Super Stinson 108-2.

This is a one way in and one way out - no go around airstrip that is only 700ft long. Please proceed with caution and make sure the weather is on your side. Also, make sure your piloting skills are top notch, many planes crash at these strips every year.

There is a very cool hot springs up the trail about a mile from the strip. If you have time, it's a must.

Also, please support the IAF and the RAF, as they aid in keeping these beautiful places open to backcountry pilots.

If you enjoy my clips, please let me know.

Beautimus! I would love a narration on some of your approaches. Technique, etc.

I've flown as guest into Lower Loon (Simplot) a number of times. Thanks for posting the video - it brings back so many great memories. Love the ride up Loon Creek to Falconberry but I haven't been back since we were there during the fires of 2003.

Very nice! If you are ever in need of some extra weight in your aircraft I'd love to volunteer!!! Impressive!!

Very cool. A question: why a 360 instead of an aggressive slip?

Cheers!

I strongly recommend a CFI who specializes in mountain and backcountry flying as you begin.

@Bonanza61JC
I used a ND8 filter taped to the lens, this helps to blur out the propeller artifacts.

A few reasons: 1) I like to overfly the strip to check conditions, 2) Going into a one way, no go around, I like a stable approach, and 3) I actually did use a light to moderate slip in this video to set up a stable approach.

Nice approach, nice landing, nice scenery!!! But Google Earth say this is ID67 (Lower Loon Creek), not U72...

quick question, does this type of flying require bush flying lessons or you just figured out as you go along?

I just stick the landing in flight simulator. It was terrifying but awesome... Had to see real videos... They have the same effect

Can't be too tough to get into if a Maule could get there!
