ERN eUROGEN Webinar 110: ARM and sexuality Part 2

This webinar was presented on 13 November by Irene Schokker-van Linschoten and Michel Haanen. Michel is a representative of a patient advocacy group on anal atrasia in The Netherlands and Irene works as a Nurse Practitioner at Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, also The Netherlands.
The webinar provided an in-depth exploration of the sexual health challenges faced by patients with anorectal malformations (ARM), focusing on the patient experience. Anorectal malformations are congenital conditions that can have significant long-term effects on bodily function, including sexual health. Through the lens of lived experiences, the session highlighted the unique sexual and emotional challenges faced by ARM patients, including issues related to physical discomfort, body image, and psychological well-being.
In these presentations, we discussed the barriers to open communication that often exist around sexual health in patients with ARM, and offer practical tips and strategies for healthcare providers on how to sensitively and effectively address these concerns. Participants learned how to create a safe, non-judgmental space for ARM patients to discuss their sexual health, and gained valuable tools for initiating conversations about intimacy, relationships, and sexual function.
The Colorectal webinar series covers all aspects of paediatric colorectal surgery. They are joint presentations between ERNs eUROGEN and ERNICA and are supported by both EUPSA and ARM-Net.
