It was a pleasant surprise for several reasons:
- The choice of a woman
- The choice of someone from somewhere other than North America or Europe
- She's younger than most winners
- Her work is much edgier and more experimental than most winners

I'm really happy and hope that this indicates future trends for the Nobel.

A new author for me, though I have heard a lot about The Vegetarian in Booktube and Bookstagram, so this is my push to get to checking out her translated works, which like you said, is about 4. I ordered these 4 online. Out of curiosity, I checked on PangoBooks this morning and compared to my search yesterday of her works, and all of her used books are sold except for 4 copies of the Vegetarian and there were about 40 yesterday.
I think this will be a huge push to have some of her backlist translated. “Your Cold Hands”, sounds intriguing, published in 2002, Maybe that one will get translated.

You know, I’m excited! 😅 The Vegetarian was the first real experimental literary fiction that I really understood/felt spoke to me.

I haven't read her yet but I'm really looking forward to it!

Got to admit, her choice was a surprise. I hadn't recalled her name until The Vegetarian was mentioned in the commentary, and I checked the shelves in my used bookstore (130, 000 volumes with a very large international fiction section) but didn't see anything available. Knowing the way the Nobel Committee operates, it's not surprising that South Korea won this year - knew it couldn't be someone from Europe or the US because of recent winners. Still rooting for Cesar Aira in the near future!

Very pleased that Han Kang won. I've only read The Vegetarian, which was a totally original work. Looking forward to trying her backlist. Particularly looking forward to Human Acts, I've been meaning to read it for ages.

Great choice, especially for Human Acts!

53 making her the youngest?! Wow, I thought there would be more younger people as well. I struggled with the vegetarian but not because it was bad, but because she achieved everything she set out to do so well that i was left uncomfortable in a way that I didn't want to be after it. All credit to her. But I have been too scared to try more by her since -- anywhere I should go to next though?? I am ready to try.

But just imagine the pressure she's under now, for whatever she writes in future! It's not fair on her!
(I mean being only 57). It's like when Brahms was young, Schumann wrote a famous article about Brahms being the next Beethoven, and as a direct result his first symphony took him 21 years to write because of the pressure. This kind of recognition should come later in life when the work is done. I'm not annoyed about it, just sympathetic - I for one would get writers block forever after.

I think the Nobel Prize for Literature is rather meaningless (much like its Peace Prize) when you consider who has NOT been awarded it. I don’t know what the committee has against Iris Murdoch but wonder why she has never been selected. Perhaps she’ll join the list of the distinguished ignored who have left a lasting body of work such as Tolstoy, Joyce, Woolf, Proust, Borges, and many others.

I’ve only read The Vegetarian 🫣, but continue to think about it & even went on a ten minute spiel about it a few nights ago to my partner- it has stayed with me . I’m happy AF she won; tbh, had I read none of her books I would just be geeked a South Korean Female won. 📚🪱💚
