Clearing up some misconceptions with SCIENCE! And a little tormenting the cameraman fun too.

this was how our lecturer demonstrated inductors and em fields to us, except ours had an alu cylinder sitting on a dowel above the coil, and was mains powered.
this also added a bit of luck, as depending on when in the mains phase you energised the coil, the cylinder might just lift up a bit, or it might go through the cieling tiles.
good times.

I wonder if sea water can be pushed against. Sea water is much less conductive but there there must be some induced current and its magnetic field must push against the original changing magnetic field.

there is a french museum called "palais de la découverte" where they got a great ring launcher. They also make 3 Kg aluminum discs levitate with a similar phenomenon.
And by the way, I loved your quotation "research is what you're doing when you don't know what you're doing"!

So the rings don't need to be insome way magnetic? I thought it was the iron oxide on the platens that made them ideal for this.

I am making myself a ring launcher, i have a beefy ass 24volt coil relay that can handle more than enough current, what kinda voltages is the coil getting run through it, i have a big ass 36000 uF 75 volt cap which can store the coil voltage the power supply is easy enough for me

I love it when he just yells out load "It's SCIENCE!"

what are the ratings of the capacitors? Where can they be bought?

should do that with the masochistic Frisbees

Cave Johnson here, let's do some science.

yup this is real, someone on youtube made a larger version from this ring launcher, so I have seen it before.

The same principle can be used for crushing aluminum cans.

I dispise people who use the term 'psudo science' when they discover something new that they dont understand.

Chris what happens if you cut a slit into the disk? Does it act like a ring launcher that has a coil on a rod and not induce a current and magnetic field and not pop up?

Question 2. What happens if you put the disk into liquid nitrogen or dry ice first?

No Hardhat? I have been hit in the head by one of these and it is not fun.

I have been building devices like this for years. The schematic is on my blog at blogspot under bobdavis321 and have many videos using up to 2 KV for 35 feet of flight.
