A short video to discuss the 3 possible pronunciations of this famous Latin name.

I have decided to make short videos in between editing time of longer detailed historical videos, so you have something to watch from my channel while you wait for the other videos to be edited and uploaded.

Hope you like the idea nobleones ^^

Thanks for clarifying that! As a fan of Roman history I always pronounced it in the classical latin way, but near where I like there is a town named Scipio and everyone just says it the normal English way and I’ve had multiple debates with people about who was right or wrong. This clears that up perfectly.

I've always used classical Latin myself.

Ho studiato latino per 5 lunghi anni...e adesso mi vieni a dire che la pronuncia che conoscevo non è quella classica!? You just broke my heart into a thousand pieces

This video is so good. This has been bugging me for years and I had heard all three pronunciations and guessed at some of these conclusions, but it feels great hearing someone who really knows their stuff clarify this for me! Thanks!!! ^.^

And as always, your linguistic videos are a thumb up with lots of new knowledge coming to my head.
I never new that there is "englified" type of pronouncing Latin...

Playing Rise of Kingdoms and was wondering this. Watching the ECHO Gaming video on the RoK ads and it comes up there. Nice having a source giving multiple pronunciations and clarifying them. Ever the good source, Metatron. Always great having channels like yours that clarify things and revise any mistakes they make.

Interesting. I had always pronounced it SKipio. Glad to know I was saying it in one of the correct ways.

Can't wait for your next video, they're always fantastic. Keep up the great work!

I have actually wondered about the pronunciation. Thanks for clearing up this issue for those if us who studied German and not Latin.

It's nice to have confirmation that my professor was using the Ancient Roman pronunciation when he taught.
Thank you for the video.

Scipio Africanus is a great hero of mine, I saw his tapestry in the Louis XVI (i think) gallery at The Getty in Los Angeles and my girlfriend didn't get why I loved him so

Dopo questo video mi sono iscritto.
Bravo, completo, affidabile, circostanziato.
(I could write this comment in English, as you have a "rather international" audience - but well, I'm Italian too and NOTHING expresses my admiration better than using our own native language).
I miei complimenti, ti seguo con grande piacere e sto imparando moltissimo.

do you have a video that covers the pronunciation of "Caesar"? Because a lot of people claim that in Fallout: New Vegas it it pronounced correctly, although I doubt it, at least nobody of my History or Latin professors in Austria ever did it, yet, Austria maybe close to Rome, but I think you are closer ;)

Fabulous! Thank you so much. I am teaching a high school world history class and knew this would trip me up as most of these names do, LOL

Brilliant! Me (British) and my wife (German) were just watching a German documentary about Scipio, and I was wondering whether the pronunication was not actually with the hard 'c' as I'd always assumed (after coming across the name/figure in an Asterix book in my childhood!) but with the 'sh' sound (from my rudimentary knowledge of Italian). Now all is clear. Well, sort of!
