WKTC My 63 Promo/ID Montage, 6/7/2023

Here's a montage of promos and legal IDs from the locally-owned, standalone MyNetworkTV station serving South Carolina's capital city, Columbia, licensed to nearby Sumter, and based in nearby Elgin. All of this was recorded in the overnight hours on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, over-the-air in northeast Columbia.

As I mentioned on a previous video, I recently had the opportunity to visit Columbia, and since not much of this station has been archived elsewhere, I decided to record as much of the station as I could. I also made an attempt to get newscasts from all of the other Columbia stations (and did for all except for WOLO, which my tuner decided to not record for whatever reason even though I scheduled it to, so blame that). But I focused on this station primarily, having no other means to see it.

WKTC is locally-owned by a consortium called WBHQ Columbia, LLC, which acquired the station from its original owner, Carolina Christian Broadcasting, in 2004. WBHQ, the call letters a reference to the previous network and positioning, the "Warner Bros. Headquarters", was CCB's only secularly formatted station, the remainder were all programmed with a religious independent format. WBHQ was sold by the company to focus on their other assets including their flagship, WGGS-TV in Greenville.

WBHQ Columbia consists of station general manager Stephanie Rein and husband David Canfield (also the chief engineer) who together own 51% of the station, with the other 49% held by GBBC, LLC. That company consists of Susan Ranson, Charles C. Mickel, Robert M. Mundy, Jr., Joe Walker, Grace Draffin, and The Tyler Vaughn Jameson Dynasty Trust all holding unequal shares in that company. All appear to have ties to South Carolina, if not Columbia, making this station about as locally-owned as you can get.

The station has been a MyNetworkTV station since 2006, but was The CW affiliate in the market from 2014 until 2019, assuming it from WZRB which dropped it after it was switched to ION when the company acquired the station from its original owners who filed for bankruptcy. In 2019, WKTC lost The CW to Gray's WIS-TV, who added it to a second subchannel. WKTC went back to branding and positioning itself as a primary MyNetworkTV affiliate, though for a couple of years after it lost The CW, the station created a logo based on the outgoing one and used that as its main logo for a brief time, before making the "My63" one its main logo again. However, The CW-esque logo survives in their (bizarre) top of hour legal IDs, which for whatever reason features an image of the Columbia Fireflies' ballpark Segra Park, set to the first few seconds of U2's "Beautiful Day".

Time and logo is superimposed on promos provided from the syndicator. They don't really seem to run a lot of promos aside from the same two MyNetwork shows and The Neighborhood, making this a fairly short montage. The station fills most spot breaks with direct response ads, so it wouldn't surprise if the station bought some of the programs for barter (where the station doesn't pay for the shows in exchange for giving up a significant chunk of the station's advertising inventory to the distributors for them to sell, and often this ends up being direct response advertising). I get a lot of KCWX vibes from this station (a fellow, independently owned CW-turned-MyNetworkTV station) based on their low-budget feel, common affiliation, and local ownership. KCWX is known to also buy shows on barter, making this an easy comparison.
