Cost of living: Starmer accused of subsidising the wealthy

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has announced his £30bn plan to freeze energy bills before the price cap increase in the autumn.

He said, "This plan will take us through this winter and there are so many people who are anxious about what's going to happen in the autumn, anxious that they can't pay their bills."

However, critics argue that the plan lacks a targeted approach, citing that even the wealthy will have their bills subsidised.

What a silly question asking how much he earns.. people are allowed to have a salary that’s in line with their job. Why did nt the sky interviewer say how much he earned.. probably more than kier..

Practically nobody is accusing Starmer of subsidising the wealthy. Sky’s need to chase headlines clearly outweighs the popular need for decent policies to address the cost of living- which Starmer has actually provided.

the interviewer is like Twitter, more concerned about Starmer than the people

Why does Sky News have such a blatant pro-Tory bias? The Tories have funnelled tens of billions that we know about to their mates over the last few years but it’s somehow Starmer that’s the problem? At least he has a plan for dealing with the cost of living crisis, unlike the Tories - and it’s a good plan, which even 75% of Tory voters support. Also, can this insufferable journalist stop interrupting Starmer and let him finish answering the questions he’s just asked him?

If the worst they can say about it is that the wealthy will also benefit, then it obviously means its good for everyone and especially those on low to median wages.

Such a shame that the media does not ask the same questions of the actual government who are the ones who have brought us to this state and are going on holidays and not doing much to help those in need.

Bernard Lewis, multi billionaire River Island owner, living in Knotty Green nr Beaconsfield…… he gets an age related free tv licence, state pension, £200 winter fuel payment plus the £400. Is this fair?

C'mon guys! If we didn't need the government to step up and resolve the issue, we probably wouldn't be asking how the government would resolve the issue. Taxes and price freezes are the tools they have. It's just math that it's easier to calculate.
Here's the case: all the money goes in one place, so the ones with higher income could still pay the same fixed sum for the same product (price freeze), but if we are in a need to differentiate the money the people with higher income contribute to HMRC, this can always be done in a different way (example: taxes - which is an option Not an answer to all problems - for further question and more details, please contact someone like Rachel Reeves)!

First decent idea from any of these leaders and he poo poos it... Yes a few rich people will benefit but targeting has cost in the implementation and arguments over where who should be targerted. There is always the ones who miss out earning 1 pound over target. What Starmer proposes can be done now and will help everyone not just the rich. Perfect can be the enemy of the good.

This is silly. It will proportionally help the poor more than the rich. Otherwise we need a yet another way to spilt who should help and who not.

I don't support Labour (or tories) but this is far more sensible than what they government are saying.

These politicians should live on what disabled and pensioners live on for a month or two. Let's see how they get on.

Who is? Some right wing, daily mail reader/journalist? Truss gives more money to higher earners, Sunak is a liar and nobody can trust anything he says AND he's a lawbreaker. Keir has set out a way in which it will help people while also penalising the greedy, massive profits the energy companies are raking in.

There is an answer to stop this strike every worker to stop work then we might get something done dump your cars in the middle of the roads if need be just lock em up and leave them where they stand stop work just to see how long it would be before we got something done because if we keep doing nothing they'll keep doing nothing

Starmer us wrong on two points.

If the government subsidises electricity, that has little to no effect on inflation overall. Someone, at some point, has to pay, whether its the consumer or the taxpayer.

The electricity price cap mostly benefits the wealthy. Many poorer people, living in smaller homes, never hit the price cap, so they never benefit from it.

If politicians ever modelled their ideas they would realise these things.
