I just wish Weller's modern equipment (heater-in-tip stuff) would be more affordable for hobbyists
Got a chance to use this modern stuff in a uni lab, and left wanting a small loan of $5000 to buy some :)

i am just a hobbyist when it comes to electronics but i experienced lead based solder wire and paste works perfectly while the other ...sort of gluey or sticky when you try to solder. Yes they are harmful to inhale but as said i'm new and don't use soldering iron or flux day to day basis. Thank you Bald engineer! your videos are jaw dropping and inspiring to do something new!

A wealth of knowledge about SMD rework in one great video!!! Thank you for making it!

Great video with some nice tools. I have done plenty of work like this with lessor tools, and I always find it fun. I tend to use Lead-free solder because I work at product development firm, and we never really know when our prototype boards are going to end up in customers hands, so just to make sure they are RHoS safe, we just always use Lead-free. It is usually harder to work with, but it is safer.

Any suggestions for the correct way to rework surface mount electrolytics? Hot air tends to make them explode, and it’s next to impossible to get tweezers on the leads. Some YouTube videos suggest just twisting them off the board with pliers. Yeah, no. Maybe some boards can withstand that, but not the old stuff I work on.

Well done. As they say, use the right tools for the job—they don‘t need to be Weller, but I take it everything you said applies to pretty much any brand of SMD tool. Just don‘t use a 100 watt monster iron for SMD😁

Still use lead solder. Always had an extractor fan.

1. Unleaded solder only; leaded is mostly for plumbing I think
2. Yes, very much yes

What is a pencil iron? Do you mean hot tweezers?

iPadRehab has a surface mount rework station that you can order, They should be able to source the microscopes that they use for you but at a cost of maybe $1, 000.

only Lead solder free sucks and always looks awful the extra temp is hard on fragile boards

I understand that this is a commercial channel, but the sudden Weller campaign is not very subtle.
Is this because of Dave Jone's video?
Please make this less obvious

Lead free solder is good for environment but its very costly for starting carrier and old age engineer not still hand for soldering process

I don't use any type of sodder - I use leaded solder though :-) Fumes - nasty either way, a simple USB fan works fine for me.

The host does a decent job, but it's annoying that this is an infomercial of no value for the public it claims it's aimed for.
