A few pointers from a lifeguard who’s worked at my university’s pool and a summer camp:

1. You don’t need to look like Pamela Anderson to be a lifeguard! The Red Cross course is designed for someone of (almost) any shape/size to save someone of (almost) any shape/size. As long as you’re a relatively competent swimmer, you should be able to pass the test.

2. Don’t pay for a Red Cross certification class unless every job you apply to requires one. Most pools/camps will PAY YOU to get certified, so don’t pay hundreds of dollars for a class you can get paid to take.

3. Every lifeguarding job is different. Some pools/beaches/waterfronts will give you shorts and a tshirt, while others will only have you wear a guard suit. Other things like rotations, breaks, shoes, phones, in-services, etc. will depend entirely on the environment.
