Blog:Kentoshi and the Importation of Chinese Culture into Japan

“If the jade is not cut and polished, it can’t be made into anything.”

– Chinese Proverb
The ease with which even Americans can see the similarity between Japanese and Chinese culture can challenge those learning about their differences. Americans often get joked about by both themselves and outsiders for hardly being able to find their own country on a map without words. This obviously is untrue for tens of millions of people. And also obvious, Japanese and Chinese cultures are universes apart. Still, myriad similarities persist. As early as the 1st century, Japanese officials sent emissaries to China to learn, borrow and trade. More relevant though are the 19 official Kentoshi missions sent 1,500 years ago to the Chinese capital Chang’an (modern Xi’an). These missions offered tributes and traded raw materials for knowledge and books. Japanese people and officials chose to emulate or absorb many of the cultural tools given to them by the Chinese court.

Japan was known as "Woguo" or "Wonuguo" before & during the Tang Dynasty. The name "Wonuguo" was given by the Eastern Han Dynasty Emperor Guangwudi in 57 AD. The golden seal gifted by Han Dynasty Emperor Guangwudi with the name "Wonuguo" was discovered in 1784 & is now an exhibit in Fukuoka City Museum. The name "Wonuguo" was subsequently changed to "Japan " after seeking approval from Emperor Wu Zetian (the only female Emperor of China). This was documented in a book 《史记正义》written in 723 AD during the Tang Dynasty. Japan had sent monks to China during the Tang Dynasty to learn Chinese culture, language, etc. The Tang Dynasty artifacts eg calligraphy, paintings, porcelains, etc, that were brought to Japan are still well preserved in several Japanese temples.

The ancient Japanese buildings & traditional culture like the kimono dress are heavily influenced by the Tang Dynasty culture while the traditional Korean culture has heavy Ming Dynasty influence.

Someone commented the phrase "研究" came from Japan, that's utter nonsense.
The phrase "研究" can be traced to poems from the The Northern and Southern dynasties and from the Tang Dynasty.
"研究"出处:
南北朝刘义庆 《世说新语·文学》:“ 殷仲堪 精覈玄论,人谓莫不研究。”
唐李山甫

So there was a cultural and other aspects imported and exported throughout the history which is translated to technology in modern days. Hopefully knowing this will help them to settle the differences between the two countries.
