You would have to trade him post June 1st. Pre-June 1st would be too large of a cap hit. When you trade a player, you are still on hook for the dead cap created from giving the player bonus money. If you trade post-June 1st, you can move half that cap hit into the next season. A pre-June 1st trade would cost the Cowboys more in cap space than they free up.

If the Cowboys can draft a QB they like in the first round, they could trade Dak for a LB or pair of LBs. The team desperately needs more LBs on the roster. It's why the defense can't stop the run.
